The intersection of crisis, addiction, and disability in German and English narratives remains an underexplored yet highly relevant field within literary, translation, and cultural studies. While literary representations of addiction often engage with individual and societal crises, questions of identity, social exclusion, and medical pathologization, the intersectional aspect of addiction and disability is frequently overlooked. At the same time, the translation of such narratives plays a crucial role in shaping their reception and interpretation across different linguistic and cultural contexts. Translation studies can make a significant contribution by examining how addiction and disability are interpreted, adapted, or even transformed in intercultural transmission.
This interdisciplinary edited volume invites contributions from literary, cultural, and translation studies that explore the representation of crisis, addiction, and disability in German and English narratives. Submissions may focus on literary works from various periods and genres, as well as intermedial and transmedial adaptations. Additionally, we welcome contributions that examine the representation of these themes in translation practice and the challenges of transferring culturally specific concepts into different linguistic and cultural spaces.

Possible topics include but are not limited to:
• Literary and cinematic representations of crisis, addiction, and disability in German and English cultural history
• Intersectional perspectives on crisis, addiction, and disability: interactions between social, cultural, and bodily factors
• Pathologization and social marginalization: narratives of crisis, addiction, and disability in German and English literature
• Transcultural challenges in the reception and adaptation of crisis, addiction, and disability narratives
• Disability studies and addiction research: interdisciplinary intersections in German and English narratives
• Intertextuality and metafiction: the connection of crisis, addiction, and disability narratives with other cultural and literary discourses
• Identity constructions in narratives of crisis, addiction, and disability: subjectivation, external attribution, and self-conception
• Migration and transculturality: crisis, addiction, and disability in literature on flight, exile, and diaspora
• Historicity and memory: historical dimensions of crisis, addiction, and disability representations in German-language literature
• Cultural boundary-making: inclusion, exclusion, and societal constructions of crisis, addiction, and disability
• War, trauma, and dependency: the role of crisis, addiction, and disability in the processing of war experiences
• Censorship and taboos: the depiction of crisis, addiction, and disability in literature and media under repressive conditions
• Translating literature on crisis, addiction, and disability: challenges and strategies
• The portrayal of addiction and disability in German and English literature and their translatability: cultural and linguistic aspects
• The role of translation in the reception of crisis narratives: a comparison between German-language and other literatures
• Translation and adaptation of crisis and addiction discourses in the media: intercultural perspectives
• Postcolonial and gender-oriented perspectives in the translation of crisis literature
• Accessible translation for people with disabilities: audio description, subtitles, and easy language
• Ethics of translating literature on crisis, addiction, and disability: sensitivity and responsibility
• Inclusive didactics in foreign language teaching: dealing with literature and media on addiction and disability in German as a Foreign Language (DaF) education
• Media literacy and crisis management: using German-language films and literature on addiction and disability in educational contexts
• Translation and adaptation processes in educational materials: barrier-free resources for DaF instruction

Submission Guidelines:
We invite interested scholars to submit abstracts (approx. 300 words) along with a short academic biography by March 15, 2025, to habib.tekin@marmara.edu.tr, faruk.yucel@ege.edu.tr. The final contributions (approx. 6,000–9,000 words) should be submitted by the end of 2025 (precise deadline will be given after abstract-acceptance).
