Scope and topics

We define urban transportation service networks broadly as any interconnected infrastructure systems (physical or virtual) and the associated enabling technologies and operations that provide service to public or private transportation demand in an urban setting. Planning, operation and management of such networks generally involve multiple interacting stakeholders who endogenously make decisions based on individual, sometimes conflicting, objectives, and various stressors that are either steady (e.g., aging, deterioration) or transient (e.g., disasters). Rapid advances have been made recently, in terms of both new methodological approaches and innovative applications, to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and resilience of transportation service networks. This special issue aims to scrutinize the efforts the community has made so far and discuss opportunities that lie ahead. The scope will cover all aspects of urban transportation service networks, with an emphasis on large-scale systems, including but not limited to:

Planning and management of service infrastructures and fleets
Operations and control of transportation service networks
Cyber-enabled transportation service networks
Urban freight logistics and supply chains
Preparedness, robustness, and recovery of service networks against unexpected events
Traffic network management and control
Transit system design, operations, and control
Mechanism design for service management (e.g., pricing, rationing)
Emerging transportation services (e.g., car sharing, EV charging)

You are invited to submit a full paper to this special issue of Transportation Research Part B, a prestigious leading journal in the field.
