Call for Papers – 4th International Workshop on Culturally-Aware Tutoring Systems (CATS2013) Memphis, USA. It similarly proposes to discuss the place of culture in the Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) research field (please note that research related to adaptive educational technology, intelligent tutoring systems, technology-enhanced learning, advanced learning technology, or adaptive hypermedia for learning is also relevant for this workshop). Considering culture in AIED research is important because culture is known to have a strong impact on many cognitive and affective processes including those related to learning. Furthermore, people with different cultural backgrounds develop alternative interpretations and strategies, and do not similarly appraise their environment, and this naturally reflects in their interactions with AIED systems. Previous CATS workshop editions generated great discussions and eventually brought new players into this specific research trend. They were also an occasion for people from related research fields (e.g. autonomous agents, HCI) to share their culture-related work with the AIED community. CATS2013 proposes to consider interconnections between culture and AIED from three different perspectives: • Designing adaptive educational technology to teach cultural knowledge and intercultural skills; • Enculturating adaptive educational technology (i.e. developing adaptive educational technology mechanisms that incorporate cultural features); • Considering cultural biases in the AIED research production, and ways to deal with them. Research at varying levels of development as well as position papers will be considered. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - AIED systems for learning about cultures - AIED systems for learning intercultural skills - Digitization of cultural knowledge and cultural skills for AIED - Collaborative learning and cultural diversity - Identification of cultural variations that are relevant for AIED - Enculturation of adaptive mechanisms for AIED activities and systems - Relations between cultured and educational features - Assessment of cultural features of AIED systems - Cultural influences on the AIED research production When stressing a link with education/adaptive educational technologies… - Computational modeling of past and present cultural contexts - Computational modeling of past and present cultural groups - Computational modeling of dynamics between varying socio-cultural groups - Computational modeling of individual cultural traits - Relations between culture and Human-Computer Interaction - Relations between culture and cognition - Relations between culture and affect - Relations between culture and motivation Solutions related to these topics can be framed in terms of: - Cross-cultural evaluation of AIED systems - System architecture - Machine learning techniques - Case-based reasoning - Educational data Mining - User modeling techniques - Computer simulations for learning purpose - Physiological and neurophysiological measurements - Intelligent and conversational agents - Multi-agent systems - Learning companions - Serious games - Virtual learning environments - Semantic or formal ontology engineering - Semantic web techniques - Adaptive hypermedia - Pervasive, context-aware, and ubiquitous computing - Mobile computing - Innovative human-computer interaction - Authoring tools - Etc. IMPORTANT DATES May 1st 2013, 23:59 Hawai Time: Paper submission due May 14th 2013: Paper decisions June 9th 2013: Camera-ready copy due. July 9 or July 13 2013: CATS workshop at Memphis, USA. SUBMISSION PROCEDURE Submissions must be exclusively in Portable Document Format (.pdf). Submissions must be in English and should be between 7 and 10 pages according to the Springer LNCS format enforced by the workshop (see http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0 ). Short papers and other kinds of presentation (e.g. posters, demos) could also be considered. Articles will be evaluated by two or more members of the program committee. Authors of accepted papers will be invited to make an oral presentation during the workshop.
