Workshop Goal

Technology and devices have become an integral part of our lives. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a new paradigm that aims to connect our daily activities including (un)anticipated events in our daily lives and disastrous situations (natural and manmade) to the Internet for rapid response. Rapid response to these events requires availability, reliability, and access to information and services through the connectivity of heterogeneous devices.

For effective rapid response using diverse low-end devices (e.g., handheld and mobile devices, robots, sensors, and wearable computers), we would like to take into consideration the emergence of the area of ambient intelligence aiming at utilizing context aware, personalized, adaptive and anticipatory services with the required devices. Smart Apps will also play a central role in enabling the connectivity and the cooperation among the devices in an intelligent manner. The key technical challenges in the development of Smart Apps are: 1) availability of apps on devices with limited resources, 2) remote sensing capability around the user's context, 3) ability to analyze and interpret the contextual data, 4) real-time adaptation toward dynamic environments, and 5) scalability and performance. We clearly?need?a?new?computation?model?for developing real-time Smart Apps. Cloud computing promises?a highly desirable (efficient and?flexible) service platform with?large-scale parallel and?distributed?computing resources (e.g., servers, storage). Smart Apps may work in collaboration with cloud platforms depending on the application domain. This hybrid model introduces new challenges and opportunities in application design and systems? research.

The Smart Apps environments and the domains of interest range from Smart Life (e.g., Smart Energy, Smart Home, Smart Health) to disaster response. Users should have seamless access to just-in-time information and Smart Apps should enable rapid response when needed. To address these emerging requirements, we are looking for original, unpublished research papers that focus on novel applications and systems, which can dynamically cope with evolving context of diverse users in a distributed manner.
