About the book

The transition toward a circular bioeconomy offers important opportunities for Ibero-American countries to create value from biological resources while addressing environmental, economic, and social challenges.
The proposed volume will examine strategies, technologies, methods, policies, and practical experiences related to circular bioeconomy across Latin America, Spain, and Portugal. It will cover agricultural, livestock, forestry, fisheries, food-processing, agro-industrial, and other bio-based value chains.
The book will bring together multidisciplinary contributions on biomass and by-product valorization, circular supply chains, digital technologies, decision-support methods, business models, governance, and regional cooperation. Particular attention will be given to the diversity of productive, technological, institutional, and territorial contexts found across Ibero-America.

Aim and scope

The book aims to:
examine the current development of circular bioeconomy initiatives in Ibero-America;
identify technological, logistical, economic, environmental, social, and institutional barriers to their implementation;
present methods and tools for assessing and improving circular bio-based systems;
disseminate successful experiences and innovative case studies from different countries and sectors;
promote dialogue between academics, practitioners, policymakers, cooperatives, companies, and other stakeholders;
identify opportunities for regional cooperation, knowledge transfer, and the development of shared research agendas.
The volume will emphasize the diversity of Ibero-American productive, territorial, and institutional contexts while also examining common challenges and opportunities for collaboration across countries.

Suggested topics

Chapter proposals may address, but are not limited to:
**Circular bioeconomy strategies, frameworks, indicators, and contributions to sustainable development.
**Valorization of biomass, residues, and by-products through bioenergy, biofertilizers, biomaterials, biochemicals, biorefineries, and industrial symbiosis.
**Circular, resilient, low-carbon, and closed-loop supply chains, including logistics, traceability, and cross-border cooperation.
**Decision-support methods, including optimization, simulation, life cycle assessment, material flow analysis, multi-criteria analysis, and spatial tools.
**Digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital twins, the Internet of Things, blockchain, and Industry 4.0/5.0.
**Governance, public policy, regulatory frameworks, innovation ecosystems, technology transfer, and public–private collaboration.
**Circular business models and socioeconomic dimensions, including entrepreneurship, financing, cooperatives, rural development, and social inclusion.
**Sectoral and territorial case studies involving agriculture, livestock, forestry, fisheries, food processing, organic waste, and other bio-based value chains.

Geographic scope

The volume will focus on Latin America, Spain, and Portugal. Country-specific, comparative, regional, and cross-border studies are welcome.
Types of contributions
The editors welcome original research, literature reviews, methodological contributions, policy analyses, and relevant industrial, territorial, or public-sector case studies.

Submission of chapter proposals

Proposals must include:
**proposed chapter title;
**abstract of 150–250 words;
**three to six keywords;
**full names, institutional affiliations, and email addresses of all authors;
**identification of the corresponding author.

Chapter proposals and final manuscripts must be written in English.

Tentative schedule

Chapter proposal submission: September 15, 2026
Notification of proposal acceptance: October 15, 2026
Estimated Full chapter submission: December 15, 2026

Further instructions will be provided to the authors of accepted proposals.

Review and publication

Proposals will be evaluated according to their relevance, originality, quality, and alignment with the scope of the book.
Acceptance of a proposal does not guarantee final acceptance of the chapter. Full manuscripts will undergo peer and editorial review.
The volume is intended for publication in Springer Nature’s Circular Economy and Sustainability book series, subject to final evaluation and approval by the publisher.
