Call For Papers

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC, Canada) and Carleton University are pleased to announce a call for expressions of interest to research on Gendered Design in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).

We ask that you please disseminate this call to your networks and contacts that you feel may be interested.

Please find the full text of the call at the following web address:
: http://scalar.usc.edu/works/gendered-design-in-steam/call-for-expressions-of-interest-1

The deadline for submitting expressions of interest is September 27, 2019 at 11:59 pm (UTC/GMT -4 hours, time zone).

This call will be of interest to LMICs researchers who are currently involved, or who are interested in becoming involved, in the conceptualization, design and/or production of technology-based solutions, applications, methods and processes. They are invited to submit expressions of interest in one of two streams:

• Stream 1: Case Studies – 15 to 20 grants valued at $10,000 to $15,000 CAD each;
• Stream 2: Case Study + Prototype – 10 grants valued at a maximum of $35,000 CAD each.
Funding from this call will support researchers in LMICs to adopt and share research and design methods and practices that bring gender considerations to the development of technology-based solutions to improve lives and livelihoods for all and particularly for women and other disadvantaged people.

Expressions of interest must pertain to innovations linked with STEAM fields, with a particular interest in the following sectors: transport/mobility; renewable energy; manufacturing; housing; infrastructure; and accessibility (cross-cutting).

Applications from both individuals (especially for Stream 1) and teams (especially for Stream 2) will be considered. Funding must be used for projects conducted within LMICs and by scholars and innovators located within those countries.

Successful applicants will not only receive funding to prepare case studies and/or prototypes, they will also benefit from capacity building activities, resources and regional expertise to assist them in incorporating gender considerations into their project, and/or in sharing and validating their related experience with the cohort of successful applicants.

Please send any additional questions to GenDesignSTEAM@cunet.carleton.ca
