Call for book chapters: "Handbook of Mathematical and Numerical Methods in Earth Sciences"
Quantitative modelling of geophysical, geological and environmental processes often requires sophisticated mathematical methods and numerical tools. Numerical simulation has become an essential part of modern earth sciences. This handbook strives to summarize the widely used mathematical and numerical methods in earth sciences, topics include (but not limited to) A. Mathematical Methods ======================= * Fundamentals of calculus * Differential equations and partial differential equations * Vector analysis and matrix algebra * Calculus of variations * Tensor analysis * Inverse methods and error estimation * Statistical methods (kriging, least-squares) * Uncertainty analysis * Case studies using mathematical methods B. Numerical Methods ==================== * Finite difference methods * Finite element methods * Finite volume methods * Boundary element methods * Fourier analysis * Spectral and spectral element methods * Meshless methods * Other relatively new numerical methods * Case studies using numerical simulations C. Applications =============== * Porous media, granular materials and poro-elasticity * Groundwater flow and hydrology * Fractures, soil mechanics and engineering geology * Seismic wave propagation in porous media * Electromagnetic methods * Gravity modelling * Signal processing * Environmental flow and transport * Climate changes and carbon reduction * Other applications in earth sciences This handbook will be published by an international publisher in 2012. Interested authors who wish to contribute a book chapter, please submit the tentative title/abstracts via EasyChair by 30 Nov 2011, and full manuscript by 15 Feb 2012. Full manuscript should be prepared using Springer's LNCS LaTex or MS Word style.
