CALL FOR PAPERS: GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IN SAARC NATIONS

The Editorial Board of the South Asian Journal of Law, Policy, and Social Research (SAJLPSR), in cooperation with the Susan B. Anthony Center at the University of Rochester, invites submissions by research scholars, academics, and concerned professionals for a 2nd issue of the first special edition of the journal centered around Gender-based Violence (GBV) in countries under the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

In response to our first Call for Papers we received more abstracts on important topics in the field of GBV in South Asia than we could publish in one issue. In keeping with our mission to disseminate this information widely, we are publishing a second issue with a target launch date of November 14, 2020, which is Children’s Day in India. The peer reviewed journal will be published with a DOI and ISSN hosted on the SSRN, an open access eLibrary, as well as in a limited print run. Authors will retain ownership of their materials.

A recent report by the United Nations, Global Study on Homicide: Gender-related killing of women and girls, calls governments to strengthen evidence-based policies and criminal justice responses in an effort to prevent and end violence against women and gender-related killings. This is clearly a global and transnational problem. However, according to the report, the region with the largest number of all women killed worldwide by intimate partners or family members in 2017 was in Asia with 20,000 deaths. Findings such as these indicate the prevalence of gender-based violence in the region and express the need for discussions to raise awareness and to provide potential remedies to end gender-based violence.

We are interested in diverse commentary that focuses on the theme of GBV, which includes, but is not limited to, physical, sexual, and psychological harm on the basis of gender, in the South Asian region. Works such as case commentaries, research papers, book reviews, and other articles which highlight the chosen legal and social problem in South Asian society are welcome. Research articles and relevant forms of academic discussion can explore GBV through fields such as policy, law, and various social structures, highlighting the issue through the lens of academics from those who work in or study the different SAARC regional countries.
