Call For Papers

Workshop on Security and Privacy-Enhanced Big Data (SPEBD 2018)
to be held in conjunction with the 13th International Conference on Availability, Reliability and Security (ARES 2018 – http://www.ares-conference.eu)
August 27 – August 30, 2018, Hamburg, Germany

The increasing interconnectedness that is being embraced by society has led to a dramatic increase in data produced by individuals’ activities. As the world around us is increasingly absorbed into the Internet of Things (IoT), nearly all of our activities are recorded and transitioned to various datasets for a variety of uses, from targeted advertising to making medical and financial judgements and beyond. In fact, many people and organizations enthusiastically adopt IoT, Social Media, and other technology platforms without giving any thought to the security and privacy of the data that they are creating. As data breaches become more commonplace, people are becoming aware that their data may be at greater risk. It is easy to despair that security and privacy are antiquated concepts, rendered obsolete by the collection and processing of the big data in modern life.

This workshop aims to highlight emerging security and privacy challenges as enterprises continue to adopt and incorporate big data capabilities and technologies into business operations. Additionally, we highlight research into technologies and techniques that will mitigate these challenges. The organizers maintain that individuals and organizations need not relinquish expectations of security and privacy in order to live in a society that makes use of the power of big data analytics. We invite research into new and innovative methods, techniques, and proofs-of-concept supported by strong theory/algorithms and simulation/experiments to submit Regular Papers for this workshop. We are also accepting Demo Papers where authors can showcase developed technology and processes as well as present code for review. Finally, we are accepting Off-the-Wall Papers, where authors may present groundbreaking and novel ideas that will be judged for their novelty as well as the plausibility of their argumentation.

We accepting submissions for:
*Regular Papers (8-10 pages, including references), will be allotted 25 minutes for presentations and 5 minutes for questions.
*Demo Papers (6-page limit, including references), which will be allotted 10 minutes for presentations, 10 minutes for a demonstration/code review, and 5 minutes for questions.
*Off-the-wall Papers (5-page limit, including references), which will be allotted 10 minutes for presentations and 5 minutes for questions.
Submissions will be evaluated as Regular Papers unless the author denotes that the submission is a Demo Paper or an Off-the-Wall Paper in the subtitle. Simultaneous submission of the same paper to multiple venues is not allowed and the organizers reserve the right to disqualify a submission out of hand should this be discovered.

TOPICS OF INTEREST INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
*Security and Privacy Challenges in Big Data Environments: Enterprise Systems; Cyber-Physical Systems; Critical Infrastructure; Social Networks; Smart Cities (and Internet of Things widely); Medical Systems; Genomics
*Secure and Privacy-Preserving Computation and Data Processing: Differential Privacy; Homomorphic Encryption; Multi-Party Computation; Oblivious RAM; Secure Enclaves, Zero-Knowledge Proofs; Proxy Re-encryption; Secret Sharing; Garbled RAM; Garbled Circuits
*Human/System Interaction: Complex System Interfaces; Privacy Policies for Big Data Systems and Technologies;
