Call For Papers

This special issue will apply advances in Strategic Decision Making to help organizations improve their agility, focus and goal-seeking processes. Since 1992, in work for the Department Of Defense (DoD, US), Ministry of Defense (UK) and NATO, Nigel Howard adapted game theory to complex systems problems, with a focus on real world peace-keeping, post-conflict stabilization, counter-insurgency operations, and the resolution of conflicts in Northern Ireland, the Balkans and Afghanistan (where drama theory is currently being used by NATO). In 2008, Nigel earned the Enduring Achievement Award by the US DoD/CCRP, in recognition of his contributions to the country’s national security and its understanding of conflict. In recent years, he focused on refining his drama theory and engaging in a variety of systems engineering projects which directly contribute to the papers found herein. Specifically, we consider how Nigel’s research are contributing to new innovations and technologies for resolving complex strategic conflicts, managing extreme uncertainty, and increasing the ability of humans achieve knowledge superiority, shared information awareness, and optimal command agility.

This special issue is looking for papers to drive the discussion on the issues mentioned above and related questions going forward. We are looking for theoretic contributions as well as lessons learned that can be generalized. The list of topics comprises, but is not limited to:

* Strategic Decision Making for Agility and Robustness
* Incorporating large world uncertainty at multiple echelons of C2
* Visualization, Collaboration, and Automation under extreme uncertainty
* Sensemaking and Network Centric Warfare Operations/ Network Enabled Capability
* Drama Theory for Asymmetric Warfare and Operations
* Advances in Operations Research for Rapid Information Exchange
* Multiple Participant Decision Making and Situational Awareness
* Communication, Coordination, and Shared and Common Operational Pictures
* Decision making for adaptive management and automated decision support
* Simulation Systems and Agent Based Modeling Environments
* Game Theory and Multiagent Systems for Control of Automated Forces

Draft papers must be submitted by close of business on December 18, 2009 to our Special Issue Guest Editor, Jason K. Levy, at jklevy@vcu.edu.
