Call For Papers

Organisation: Institute of Contemporary History and Centre of 20th Century Interdisciplinary Studies
Local: Lisbon
Datas: 5 and 6 April 2018
Deadline for proposals: 15 September 2017

The NOVA Universityʼs Intitute of Contemporary History, in partnership with Coimbra Universityʼs Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of the XX Century, is organizing the VI Europe in the World Annual Meeting, devoted to the subject of “Europe of Knowledge”.

European cooperation in the field of higher education is, in fact, previous to the creation of the European Union (EU), but was, in large extent, fostered by it. The 1940ʼs witness the beginning of a “Europeʼs mobility” namely by the creation of think-thanks, which gathered not only academics but also intellectuals and politicians, which would contribute to the conception of an “Europe of Education”, and also whose reflections would, decades later, be somehow inscribed in the making of the ERASMUS programme, which is still the most emblematic mobility programme of the EU in the area of education.

In the 30 years of the creation and implementation of the ERASMUS programme and also by the occasion of the 60 years of the signing of the Treaty of Rome, this international conference aims to debate and reflect upon the creation and development of, and past, present and future perspectives for the Europe of Knowledge.

Freedom of movement for people, the Bologna Declaration and the European Higher Education Area, the Lisbon Strategy for a knowledge-based economy, ERASMUS, COMENIUS, LEONARDO DA VINCI, SOCRATES, GRUNDTVIG programmes and sub programmes, the Horizon 2020 and the European Research Area are fundamental instruments of the EUʼs policy in this domain. Under this framework, the “Europe of Knowledge” conference accepts paper proposals from various research areas, whose contributions – theoretical, empirical and/or comparative – focus on, but are not limited to:

- the evolution of European cooperation in the area of Education and Science;
- the role of the political power and other players (institutional or individual) in the definition and development of a Europe of Knowledge;
- the conception and implementation of different mobility programmes (for teachers, researchers, students and staff), their accomplishments and constrains;
- the relation between mobility programmes and the formation of a European conscience and a European single work market;
- the knowledge transference between the academia, the economy and civil society and its impact.

Paper proposals must include title, abstract (up to 300 words), three keywords, and a short CV (which includes authorʼs affiliation and his/her academic degree, and up to five relevant publications in the field) and be sent, in Word format, to alice.cunha@fcsh.unl.pt

Portuguese and English are the conference working languages. There will be no simultaneous translation.

There is no conference fee, as well as no support for travels and accommodation.

The papers presented at the conference will be published, after a peer-review process. The participation in the conference does not imply sending the paper to be submitted for publication, although that is highly encouraged.
