Fifteen years after the end of its long civil war, Angola remains a challenging study field f or history and the social sciences, as attested by the recent publication of several books on its historical trajectory from the pre-colonial period to the post-2002 economic boom. The present moment, in particular, is fraught with interrogations. Will the announced August 2017 presidential contest allow for a new political cycle? Or will Angola’s current political and social configuration remain unchanged? And what about its economic model?

This is therefore an apt moment to bring together historians and social scientists to reflect upon Angola. In the construction of Angola’s nationhood what was the specific weight of the past? In taking stock of the nation’s advances and constraints in the last decades, what can be ascribed to the colonial legacies and what can be imputed to contingencies and policy choices of its leaders? To what extent have external factors, and Angola’s insertion in the world economy, conditioned its economic development – and how can they be expected to influence it in the foreseeable future?

This multidisciplinary conference aims to gather assessments on the history of Angola as well as reflections on the expected evolution of the country. Its purpose is to foster debates on new objects and perspectives of research on the political, economic, and cultural history of Angola, both revisiting classic historiographical issues and discussing themes and questions of current relevance.
