SPECIAL ISSUE DETAILS
The convergence of sensing and identification technologies, together with communication, mobile computing, IoT and big data enables us to gain impressive awareness about the state of the real world and will drastically change the way we interact with our environment. Researches in Smart Cities have the aim to improve the quality of life by providing more and more efficient public services for better living. Key sectors include transport, energy, health care, water and waste, but also context-based services, e-commerce, safety and location privacy, and agricultural applications are examples of potential domains to explore. The main features of a smart city include a high degree of information technology integration and a comprehensive application of information resources. The essential components of urban development for a smart city should include smart technology, smart industry, smart services, smart management and smart life. This special issue aims to bring together computer scientists, industrial engineers and researchers present experimental or theoretical results, novel designs, work-in-progress, experience, case studies, and trend-setting ideas in the area of smart city.

Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to:
- Intelligent transportation systems: green transportation, public transport, carpooling techniques, mobility management, etc.
- Knowledge management for urban problems
- Environmental issues (water and air pollution, traffic congestion, etc.)
- Environment and Urban Monitoring
- Fleet management and services
- Sustainable urban grow, planning, and economic development
- Energy management
- Urban crowdsourcing
- Smart City Governance
- Open data platforms
- Smart Home and Community
- Context and location awareness
- e-Work and e-Business applications
- Security, privacy and trust in smart cities
- Communication networks for smart cities: new sensor and camera technologies; high-speed and collaborative communication networks; wireless sensor networks and road-side assistance systems; V2V, V2I, and V2X communications (e.g., with bicyclists, pedestrians, etc.)
- Disaster recovery and coordination using social media
- Internet of Things in smart cities
- Pervasive applications for user interaction and data collection
- Social and cloud applications for cities
- Safety and emergency systems
