Computational Advances in Bioinformatics (CAB 2009)
Special Session in the 16th International Conference on Neural Information Processing (ICONIP'09) December 1-5, 2009 ORGANIZERS: Asst. Prof. Dr. Asawin Meechai, Systems Biology and Bioinformatics Research Group, King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi, Bangkok, Thailand (asawin [dot] mee [at] kmutt [dot] ac [dot] th) Dr. Santitham Prom-on, Department of Computer Engineering, King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi, Bangkok, Thailand (santitham [at] cpe [dot] kmutt [dot] ac [dot] th) OVERVIEW Bioinformatics is very much a computational science in which biology, computer science, and information technology merges into a single discipline. The goals of bioinformatics include validation of genetic markers, gaining of mechanistic insights into biological systems, understanding of our phylogeny (evolutionary history), engineering of rational proteins, and development of rapid vaccines. Often it is the goals that guide the processes. With the advent of technologies like DNA sequencing and DNA microarray, an enormous amount of information has been generated that can only be efficiently analyzed with computers. As the information becomes ever larger and more complex, more computational tools are needed to sort through the data. These include: * Development of new algorithms and statistics with which to assess biological information, such as relationships among members of very large data sets. * Development and implementation of tools that enable efficient access and management of different types of information, such as various databases, integrated mapping information. * Visualization of various types of biological data to aid in analysis and interpretation of nucleotide and amino acid sequences, protein domains, and protein structures. The ICONIP'09 special session on "Computational Advances in Bioinformatics" (CAB 2009) aims to bring together experts and researchers from the interdisciplinary field of bioinformatics to discuss the latest advances in the computational aspect of bioinformatics. TOPICS Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * DNA, RNA and protein sequence analysis * Structural bioinformatics * Gene expression analysis * Biomarker discovery * Disease classification * Modeling and dynamics * Grid computing for bioinformatics * Image and signal analysis (regulatory and gene networks, physiological simulation, metabolic control theory, tissue visualization via tomography and nuclear magnetic imaging) SUBMISSION All special session submissions are to follow the Springer LNCS format with a limit of eight A4 format pages.
