Call For Papers

IoT Tech Day 2017 Call for Papers is now open! (closes February 12, 2017)

On April 19, 2017 the IoT Tech Day 2017 conference of the NLJUG will be held. The conference will be taking place at conference venue 'Jaarbeurs' in Utrecht, Netherlands. The organizing committee is looking for you as a speaker to present your session in one of the available timeslots.

If you have an interesting IoT related topic that you would like to present, this is your chance. A timeslot has 45 minutes. Attendees typically have intermediate to advanced IoT experience and are looking for practical content to enhance their knowledge. Most valued sessions include best practices, code samples and/or live demos. Besides regular technical sessions, we are also looking for hands-on labs proposals, interactive workshops and unconference-style sessions. Submitting multiple papers is allowed of course.
Tips for submitting

A regular session timeslot has 45 minutes.

Content can be any of the following four session types:

- Technical session - a 45 minutes presentation style session featuring technical content. Keynotes, and early-bird sessions are also considered to be technical sessions.
- Hands-on labs (HOL) - a 95 minutes session that features self-guided lab descriptions for participants who bring their own laptops to experiment with certain technology. Typically a HOL features one or more instructors for troubleshooting.
- Interactive workshop - a 45 minutes workshop with interaction with the attendees. An interactive workshop is ideal to present a new product or service (even if work is in progress).
- Unconference - a 45 minutes facilitated, participant driven session centered around a theme or purpose. This kind of session will allow for more audience interaction led by a discussion leader.

We are accepting content in the following tracks:
- Connected Living and Office - involves all aspects of the automation of your home and (large scale) offices. This track includes centralized control of lighting, temperature control, appliances, security locks of gates and doors and other systems, to provide improved convenience, comfort, energy efficiency and security.
- Connected Health & Wearables - This track encompasses programs in health monitoring, remote care, disease and lifestyle management, healthcare insurance ethics, monitoring of professional athletes and how to design a new futureproof hospital, while using the newest wearable and health technology.
-Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality - Not really IoT, but cool stuff to experiment with! Topics on development platforms for VR & AR (Unity, Tango), educational implementation, possibilities of current hardware and content creation.
- Data & Security - All IoT services and products collect and transmit (private) data. This track contains solutions to cope with data and security issues, such as Big Data, Blockchain and Network Security.
- Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence - all cool stuff related to intelligent machines. Understanding human speech, beating humans in games like Go and self-driving cars are just some examples.
- IoT Hardware & Connectivity - Topics on all IoT hardware devices (such as microcontrollers, gateways and the newest & coolest stuff) and IoT connectivity (Infrastructure, wireless, LoRa, Mesh). When should you use which device? Fails or lessons learned with respect to hardware choices. A comparison between devices.
- IoT Enterprise solutions - IoT for business with sessions on Mobile Commerce, Smarting Monitoring & management, Asset Tracking and Smart Cities and other interesting government applications.

How proposals will be judged
When the deadline has passed, the session selection committee are handed the session abstracts and they have to individually rate the sessions using a "five star system" (1: bad -- 5: excellent). The committee consists of 9 members, with representation from the NLJUG, open source communities and experts in IoT software and hardware. You can meet the program committee here. Selection committee members judge the session abstracts for themselves paying attention to the following criteria in no particular order:

Is it a hot topic?
Diversity in topics for this particular conference
Variety in topics over conferences in the past
Speaker credentials (pay attention to your speaker bio, especially previous speaking engagements!)
Evaluation results for speaker from previous conferences/universities, if any
Whatever other criteria they may find of interest (that's why they stand out, right?)
Finally, the committee sits together and adds up the individual ratings. Remarkably, most of the time this produces very uniform results. Still, the final cut is a tough call. If conflicts arise the NLJUG board members make the final call, but most of the time we'll manage to come to an agreement before that happens.

Fortunately for us, we do receive lots of proposals. Mostly, over four times the amount of session slots available. This means we have to disappoint people as well. Sometimes we get angry e-mails or funky phone calls in return. That's why we like to share this information with you here and manage expectations up front.

Is it an honest system? Yes, we like to think so. This way we try to eliminate all kinds of conflicts of interests. Quality content first! If you think there's anything wrong with that, or have suggestions for improvement, we would love to hear from you. Drop the selection committee a line at papers@nljug.org.
