The terms "virtual" and "reality" of the phrase “virtual reality” are literally contradictory when the two words are put together. Thus, it would seem that the term has no practical significance, but the rapid development of science and technology has given "virtual reality" a new meaning. "Virtual reality" loosely encompasses several different types of simulations that all involve the use of computer technology to develop high-tech systems that provide users with similar environments in a virtual realm to those they would experience if they were physically present in such environments. The computer system consists of a logical model, while humans see a simulated world of three-dimensional objects and movements through an output device, letting users experience an immersive type of feeling. As new technologies improve this simulated three-dimensional environment, users will be increasingly able to operate as they do in the real world; thus, experiencing the real environment virtually.

Virtual reality technology has been developed based on a combined set of technologies that include computer graphics and image processing techniques, simulations, human computer interfaces, multimedia, and sensors. The essence of "virtual reality" is a type of advanced computer user interface. In recent years, as the sensors and new media platform technologies have been developed, it has been widely adopted for various fields in virtual reality research. However, the shortcomings of the existing virtual reality in time and space are becoming more and more obvious; the current virtual reality cannot meet users’ requirements. To solve these time-and-space contradictions, the whole research community is studying next-generation virtual reality technologies. The term "next generation virtual reality" usually simply refers to a virtual reality platform, content and device which are different from the previous ones, but it can also refer to a computing platform that provides unified management of data, services, voice, video and other media business integration, integrates wearable device and mobile phones, and can cope with increases in immersive human-machine-interaction services and other value-added services. Neural computing technology is expected to be one of the promising core technologies of this kind of virtual reality computing platform. The application prospects for such next-generation virtual reality are broad; they represent the future development direction of computer virtual reality.

This special issue calls for high quality, up-to-date technology related to Virtual Reality Technology with various of sensors and technologies based on neural computing, and serves as a forum for researchers all over the world to discuss their works and recent advances in this field. Both theoretical studies and state-of-the-art practical applications are welcome for submission. All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed and selected on the basis of both their quality and their relevance to the theme of this special issue.
