Wireless networks are currently intensely deployed worldwide, being one of the key paradigms of the Internet success. In this context, the traffic generated by mobile users is going to heavily increase in the near future, due to the fact that the number of connected devices will increase in countries like China and India, as well as in the entire Africa continent. Moreover, the Internet applications are becoming bandwidth hungry, as a result of the variety of offers and services available to users. Thus, there is the need of increasing the performance (in terms of bandwidth and delay) of current wireless networks. However, one of the side effects of this trend is an increase in the costs paid by the operator to design and to manage a wireless network with high performance.

One of the key problems of telecommunications networks is the increase in the power consumption as a result of increased performance. In this context, the topic of energy-aware networking has become hot in the last years. The main idea of this approach is to exploit power consumption reduction techniques in order to limit the electricity costs encountered by the operators. Although the benefits of green networking are clear, the operators should consider a wide area covering the whole costs and savings that can be achieved in wireless networks. In this context, assessing the whole sustainability of a wireless network is the key problem. For example, the electricity savings derived from an energy-aware policy should not trigger a substantial degradation of the user performance. At the same time, the impact on the reliability costs of the energy-aware policies should be carefully considered. Thus, the sustainability of the cellular network is of mandatory importance. A sustainable network should always guarantee performance to users while at the same time limiting all the costs that are derived from the design and the management of the network. In this context, the following questions arise. Are wireless networks sustainable in terms of benefits/costs? Is it possible to improve their sustainability? How to design and to manage sustainable wireless networks? The answer to these questions is the primary goal of this special issue.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

- Sustainable design of 4G/5G cellular networks
- Sustainable management of 4G/5G cellular networks
- Future architectures for sustainable cellular networks
- Costs/saving models in cellular networks
- Algorithms for improving the sustainability in cellular networks
- Cellular networks powered by renewable sources
