Call For Papers

Scope and Objective

The popularity of cloud computing, the evolution of big data and the increasing dynamism in business processes poses interesting challenges for service-based systems and collaborative systems. Such challenges range from uncertainty of functional and non-functional requirements to the design and development of smart systems. The term “smart systems” constitutes an umbrella of models, methods and emerging frameworks proven to be flexible and efficient in making autonomous decision, thereby combining different technologies for enhanced autonomy and collaboration. The realization of smart systems relies on the interplay of mechanisms for sensing, adaptation, control, decision making and knowledge management based on the available information. A major challenge in the development of smart systems is bringing together interdisciplinary technical solutions and specialized know-how to provide innovative services and methods, enabling a more efficient and collaborative use of the Web, in particular leveraging Cloud Computing, Big Data, Crowd-Sourcing, Ontologies and Semantic Web, and Social Networking.

The core ideas of service-based and knowledge based-systems as well as multi-agent systems often characterize the architectures that exhibit the agility, and the adaptive and intrinsically distributed and cooperative properties which enable to address uncertainty of highly dynamic situations, while respecting functional and non-functional agreements.

The focus of this special issue is on the technological solutions that exploit agile, adaptive and reconfiguration characteristics to address unexpected circumstances and evolving scenarios in smart systems.
Topics of Interest

The topics of the call regard original contributions focusing on the following challenges in smart systems:

Agile and adaptive techniques for handling uncertainty and dynamic situations.
Knowledge management and reuse for intelligent decision-making and knowledge sharing.
Autonomic collaborations and web-based collaboration management.
Techniques for dynamic composition and reconfiguration of services and information systems.
Integration and interoperability of architecture, components and services.
Autonomous and adaptive systems and behaviours.
Intelligent planning and monitoring of system dynamics.
Semantics representation and management for enhanced collaboration.
Privacy, security and safety in cooperative systems.

Paper solicitation

This issue is an open special issue where papers are expected from various research and enterprise communities: organizational and collaborative systems that leverage Web 2.0, agent architectures, and infrastructures for dynamic collaboration, the SOA and the Semantic Web, cloud computing as well as policies and mechanism for security and privacy and safety of smart systems.

We will solicit papers through publicity in conferences/meetings/workshops and through and call-for-papers. Specifically, we will consider:

1. Selected Papers from those accepted in the 24th IEEE International Conference on Enabling Technologies: Infrastructure for Collaborative Enterprises (WETICE’2015, Cyprus).

Now in its 24st year, WETICE is a key forum for international researchers and industry experts to discuss the latest trends, breakthroughs and challenges in enabling technologies for collaboration, consisting of a number of cognate conference tracks. We plan to select the accepted papers from the following tracks: ACEC, AROSA and Web2Touch. Each submitted paper will be required to be a substantial extension of the conference paper (at least 40% difference from the conference version).

2. Open Call-For-Papers

We also plan to advertise an open call-for-papers (CFP) by listing the CFP in major academic announcement mailing lists/websites and by sending the CFP to researchers in the areas around the world. We estimate there will be a number of submissions via the open call-for-papers. Then, we plan to select another a few papers from the submissions. Submitted papers must be original and must not be in consideration for publication in any other journal or conference.

Each paper (including the selected papers from the conference) will go through a rigorous peer-review process by at least three international researchers. We will communicate explicitly that this SI will be composed of 9-11 papers. The acceptance rate will hence be low, as our focus is on the quality of submissions.

Selection and evaluation criteria

Significance to the research community of FGCS.
Relevance to the special issue.
Originality of research innovation, technical contribution and significance of the presented results.
Quality, clarity and readability of the written text.
Quality of references and related work.
Quality of research hypothesis, assertions and conclusions.
