Call For Papers

Chapter contributions are invited for a forthcoming edited book, titled Sustainable Cities in Asia, edited by Federico Caprotti (King's College London) and Li Yu (Cardiff University). See below for chapter abstract submission instructions.

The book has developed as a result of dialogue and discussion between scholars, editors and the editorial team at Routledge’s Asian Studies series. Both scholars and policymakers are being invited to contribute to the book. We are keen on including chapters that focus on Asia broadly defined. Our aim for the book is for a well-structured and incisive contribution to the wide-ranging debate around the shaping of urban socio-environmental futures in Asia in the 21st century.

Our vision for the book is for a critical series of interventions engaging with a range of topics in three sections:

Section 1: Defining and questioning the sustainable city in Asia

Chapters in this section will critically tackle the meaning(s) of contemporary sustainable and eco-urbanism in Asia, to include issues of social as well as environmental and socio-economic sustainability. They will thus discuss debates around the meaning and operationalization of urban sustainability in an Asian context.

Section 2: Challenges and regional perspectives

Chapters in this section are expected to tackle a distinct sustainability challenge in pan-Asian perspective. Examples of areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Climate change

- Resilience

- Transition

- Energy

- Disasters and risk

- Transport

- Green building

- Real estate markets

- Urban inequalities and social sustainability

While you may include case studies in you chapter in this section, we ask that for the purposes of this section, the main thrust of the discussion should focus on the theme (e.g. one of the themes above) from a pan-Asian perspective, and not focus exclusively on one country or city.

Section 3: Shaping the sustainable city in Asia

Chapters in this section are expected to critically investigate current and future models of sustainable urban development, such as: Smart Cities, Eco-Cities, Compassionate Cities, low-carbon communities, alternative forms of eco-urbanism, etc.

Chapters are expected to be between 5,500 and 7,500 words in length, including references.

Please send abstracts as Word attachments to federico.caprotti [at] kcl.ac.uk no later than 04 November 2014. We will contact you with a decision soon after, and will expect a full first draft on 15 May 2015, with publication intended for mid-2016. Each submitted chapter will undergo peer review.
