The smart grid is an electronically controlled electrical grid that connects power generation, transmission, distribution, and consumers using information and communication technology. One of the key characteristics of the smart grid is its support for bi-directional information flow between the consumer of electricity and the utility provider. A critical twist on the current electrical grid system, this kind of two-way interaction would allow electricity to be generated in real-time based on consumer demands and power requests. While the system would allow users to get more control over electricity use and supply, many security issues are raised to ensure information privacy of the users as well as authorization procedures for electricity use. Security loopholes in the system could, in fact, aggravate the electricity supply system instead of improving it. The quality of the information from billing and accounting is also a major concern. With this Special Issue, we open the door to encourage researchers to discuss issues related to information integrity and security services in the smart grid, particularly from the communication point of view to construct energy, control, and information processing systems for the smart grid.
Topics of Interest:
Any topic related to information integrity and security services in the smart grid, particularly from the communications and data management point of view, is to be considered. The topics include but are not limited to:
- Data quality in the smart grid
- Secure smart metering
- Secure Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) communication and management
- Privacy protection in smart grid
- Smart grid security database architecture and models
- Security services for smart grid
- User authentication, access control for smart grid
- Hardware design for information protection in smart grid
- Simulation and performance analysis of smart grid security operations
Submission Guidelines and Review Process:
- Each submission must be original, unpublished, and must not be under review elsewhere.
- All papers should be submitted via journal’s electronic submission system.
- Each paper will be reviewed by experts on the relevant areas.

First round review notification: August 31, 2014
Revised paper due: September 30, 2014
Notification of acceptance/rejection: October 31, 2014
Submission of final manuscript: November 15, 2014

All manuscripts will be refereed by at least three reviewers with expertise in the respective subject areas. Submission of a manuscript to this special issue implies that no similar paper is already accepted, under submission or will be submitted to any other conference or journal. Manuscripts that are extensions of existing work must provide significant added value and those extensions must be described in detail; otherwise, the manuscript will be immediately rejected.
