The Research Center for the Study of Aesthetics and Sociology of Music (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, New University of Lisbon), invites the submission of proposals for communication in the International Colloquium 'The Taste for Music', a tribute to João de Freitas Branco in the 90th anniversary of his birth, which will take place on the 19th and 20th October 2012 at the New University of Lisbon.
This colloquium aims to focus on several areas in which João de Freitas Branco (Lisbon, January 10, 1922 - Caxias, November 17, 1989) developed his activity, focusing on aspects of its action in Portuguese culture and society, as well as aspects of the role of other intellectuals, musicologists and artists related with him, and on their own circles of sociability, institutions and places of intersection and circulation of ideas, and of promotion, discussion and dissemination of music and culture.
The aim is also to promote a wider debate about philosophy and sociology of taste, like the formation of taste to aesthetic valuation and the creation of modes of artistic enjoyment in the press, in the mass media and in new digital social networks, music review, musical dissemination and programming, the status of "amateur of music," the question of formation of canons and the center-periphery relations.
All interested parties are invited to submit related proposals for oral presentations of 20 minutes. The proposal should contain a title and an abstract (up to 300 words) and five keywords. It is also requested some brief biographical notes (up to 150 words), institutional affiliation, telephone contact and an electronic address. Proposals must be submitted until the 30th of June 2012 for the following address: coloquioogostopelamusica2012@gmail.com.
The acceptance of the proposals will be notified during the month of July.
