--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The massive migration of data applications towards mobile platforms is leading to great opportunities but also strong challenges for mobile network operators, smartphone providers, mobile web companies, telecom vendors, application developers and so on. Business models are characterised by strong uncertainty and complexity, because of the far-reaching convergence and interdependencies between various industries, the changing user patterns and demographics, and evolution of regulatory frameworks.

Research questions on business, user and regulatory aspects of mobile systems and services are often linked to the stakeholders’ fundamental issues. Mobile operators need to find ways to cope with the explosion of mobile data and the need for additional investments on the one hand, and the threat posed by alternative platforms and OTT applications. Application developers and aggregators need to position themselves vis-à-vis browser-based models and upcoming demands for Internet of Things functionalities. Smart Cities require a range of urban applications, which need to combine public open data, private resources, the power of crowdsourcing, new mobile payment models in a profitable and attractive way.

The 4th International Workshop on Business Models for Mobile Platforms calls for original papers on these topics. Papers may be of an empirical or a conceptual nature. They may deal with the characteristics of successful business models in this field, the emergence of new mobile industry architectures, and the competition and collaboration between media, IT, internet and telecommunications companies regarding mobile platforms. The presented research may focus on individual platforms and applications, as well as on cross-platform comparative studies.

WORKSHOP TOPICS
The workshop is multidisciplinary, and specifically encourages research papers on the following topics:
• Choosing and multi-homing between multiple platforms
• App store versus browser-based models
• Mobile advertising
• Customer ownership, user data and privacy concerns
• The impact of Over-The-Top applications
• Smart City platforms
• Mobile payment models
• Traffic and mobility platforms
• Platforms for the Internet of Things
• Mobile Cloud Service models
• Mobile Service Platforms and back-office
• 4G business models
• Business aspects of spectrum allocation
• Standardisation strategies of mobile platforms
• Interoperability of and access to mobile platforms
• Mobile Net Neutrality

REGISTRATION, PAPER SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION

The BMMP12 workshop requires the submission of FULL PAPERS (rather than the extended abstracts that were required for previous events). Only PDF files will be accepted for the review process. Registration and Paper Submission are through the EDAS system at http://edas.info//N11773. A short (50 word) abstract is requested on registration of the submission. A full paper should then be uploaded for review by the BMMP12 Technical Programme Committee.

Detailed submission instructions are at http://www.icin.biz/bmmp12.

To be published in the ICIN 2012 Conference Proceedings published within the IEEE Conference Publications Program and IEEE Xplore, at least one author of an accepted paper is required to register for the workshop at the full or member rate and the paper must be presented at the workshop. Non-refundable registration fees must be paid prior to uploading the final IEEE-formatted, publication ready version of the paper.
