Call For Papers

Audio in all its forms – music, sound effects, or dialogue - holds tremendous potential to engage, convey narrative, inform, dramatize, create attention and enthrall. However, in computer-based environments, for example games, nowadays the interaction abilities through and with sound are still not sufficiently explored. The Audio Mostly Conference provides a venue to explore and promote this untapped potential of audio by bringing together audio experts, content creators, interaction designers, and behavioral researchers.

The area of interest covers new sound applications that demand or allow for some kind of interactive response from their listener, particularly in scenarios where screens and keyboards are unavailable, unsuitable or disturbing. This area implies cognitive research and psychology, as well as technological innovations in audio analysis, processing and rendering. The aim is to both describe and push the boundaries of sound-based interaction in various domains, such as gaming, serious gaming, education, entertainment, digital arts and safety.

The theme this year is “Sound as future vision”
The theme covers ways that in the future may allow sound to play a different role compared to now. In this future sound may also inherit characteristics and significance that visual component (graphics and vision) has today. Contributions addressing sound and sonic design in potential future fields are encouraged.

Topics of Interest:
Audio Mostly conference is strongly interdisciplinary and provides a space for alternative creative approaches. Hence, prospective contributions are not limited to narrow themes. The following areas of interest are indicative:
• Sound design for information and mobility contexts
• Sound design for communication, education or therapy
• Audio broadcasting, podcasting and audio books / games
• Alternative interfaces for interactive sound and music
• Affective sound design and audio interfaces
• Audio technologies for social networking
• Sound design and sonic art
• Interactivity through sound and speech
• Sound and music in games and interactive installations
• Tools and methods for sound design
• Tools and methods for the evaluation of sound design
• Sound and music classification, recommendation and user feedback
• Semantic speech, music, and sound analysis
• Semantic audio processing
• Interactive composing, authoring and performance
• Generative music and dynamic composition
• Design of dynamic and affective soundscapes
• Computational creativity techniques in sound design and music
• Cognition of sound and music

Paper Submissions:
Researchers, composers, game developers, sound artists, audio engineers, etc. who are interested in sharing their results, perspectives and insight to a multidisciplinary audience are invited to submit electronically full papers. Poster papers are also allowed, providing a venue for researchers and practitioners to discuss their work-in-progress.

Full papers: up to 6-8 pages, anonymized, in ACM Proceedings Format with up to 150 word abstract.
Poster papers: submit a 2-6 page extended abstract or short paper prepared using ACM CHI Extended Abstracts format.

Submitted papers will be reviewed by at least two referees and all accepted ones will be published in the Conference Proceedings. In addition to the technical program, a social program will be offered to the participants and their companions. It will provide an opportunity to meet colleagues and friends against a backdrop of outstanding natural beauty and rich cultural heritage in one of the best-known international tourist destinations.

Conference Location and Venue:
This year, the "Audio Mostly 2012 – 7th Conference on Interaction with Sound" is hosted by Ionian University/Dept. of Audio and Visual Arts and Dept. of Music Studies on the Ionian island of Corfu, a crossroads and a cultural hub of the Mediterranean basin, steeped in history and tradition and bathed in the extraordinary light, landscape and scenery that has inspired so many, from Homer to Gerald Durrell and beyond. The conference will be held at the main hall of the historic building of Ionian Academy.
