Call For Papers | |||||||||||||
We are excited to announce the call for papers for the eighth edition of CAOS - Cognition And OntologieS.
CAOS 9 will be co-located with the Joint Ontology Workshops - JOWO 2025 in Catania, Italy (September 8-12). Website: https://caos.inf.unibz.it/ Deadline: June 1st (AoE), 2025 About the Workshop: The purpose of the workshop is to bridge the gap between the cognitive sciences, and research on formal ontologies and, thus, to create a venue for researchers interested in interdisciplinary aspects of knowledge representation. More specifically, CAOS investigates fundamental cognitive phenomena and concepts across language, psychology, and reasoning, examining how these can be formally and ontologically analyzed in the context of both traditional symbolic AI and contemporary neural approaches. The workshop emphasizes the exploration of connections between cognitive sciences/experimental psychology and ontologies, while also incorporating insights from recent advances in large language models and embodied cognition. This investigation aims to develop robust formal and logical modeling approaches that can capture these relationships effectively. The workshop particularly focuses on how such formalizations and ontological analyses can enhance current AI systems and information architectures, bridging the gap between broad but shallow artificial intelligence and human-like cognitive capabilities. We welcome submissions addressing the ontological foundations of cognitive building blocks and cognitive capacities, including concept invention, combination, language acquisition, and categorization. Submissions examining the cognitive and epistemological adequacy of ontological modeling in the context of current AI developments are also welcomed. Important Dates: Submission deadline: June 1st , 2025 Notification of acceptance: July 14th, 2025 Camera-ready deadline: September 1st, 2025 Workshop: between September 8-9th List of Topics: CAOS invites paper contributions related (but not restricted) to the following areas: Ontologies of cognitive phenomena and their relationship to large language models; Logic and Cognition in the context of hybrid AI systems; Formal representation of cognitive structures/functions/processes (e.g., Conceptual Spaces, Neural-Symbolic Integration); Knowledge Representation and Common-Sense reasoning in the era of Large Language Models; Formalization of language, affordances and language acquisition in embodied AI; Cognitive development from an ontological perspective; Metaphors and analogies: formal representation and implementation; Integration of ontologies with large language models for enhanced cognition; Knowledge acquisition and categorization in AI and Robotics; Concept-based computational creativity, concept invention and concept combination. Type of Contributions: We welcome diverse contributions including research papers, case studies, and theoretical explorations that align with the workshop's themes. We accept three types of papers: Abstract for presentation only: 2-3 pages, 10-15 minutes presentation (not included in the proceedings as papers) Short papers: 6-8 pages, 10-15 minutes presentation Full research papers: max. 10-14 pages, 20-25 minutes presentation (Page number includes references, presentations include Q&A.) Submissions must be sent via Easychair as a single PDF file and should be formatted in CEUR 1-column format. Template: https://ceur-ws.org/HOWTOSUBMIT.html; https://www.overleaf.com/latex/templates/template-for-submissions-to-ceur-workshop-proceedings-ceur-ws-dot-org/wqyfdgftmcfw. Submission link: https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=fois2025 Please select the track WS: Cognition and Ontologies. For inclusion in the workshop, at least one of the authors of accepted papers must register at JOWO 2025 and participate on-site at CAOS. Location: CAOS is co-located with JOWO (https://www.dmi.unict.it/fois2025/?page_id=422) held in the beautiful city of Catania, Italy. Join us at CAOS to add a sparkle of cognition to the main event! We look forward to your valuable contributions to a fruitful and thought-provoking discussion. Best regards, Stefano De Giorgis Guendalina Righetti Gabriele Sacco Nicolas Lazzari |
