In today’s rapidly advancing technological landscape, autonomous systems have become pivotal, reshaping industries and revolutionizing human interactions with the world. From enhancing security through advanced surveillance systems to optimizing resource usage with intelligent irrigation solutions and from boundary-transcending drones to civilian surveillance systems that provoke critical ethical discussions, autonomous systems are now integral to our lives. This workshop aims to explore the complex interplay between the technical capabilities of autonomous systems, the ethical challenges they present, and the crucial role of human interaction in their operation.

Despite their remarkable independence, autonomous systems are not entirely self- sufficient. Human interaction remains essential, as these systems may occasionally require intervention for tasks such as issuing warnings, scheduling maintenance, or providing updates on emerging trends. Therefore, understanding the synergy between technology and human agency is crucial.

Topics

We invite researchers, practitioners, and visionaries to contribute to our workshop on the Technical and Ethical Aspects of Autonomous Systems. We welcome submissions that explore a diverse array of themes, including but not limited to:

1. Technical Advancements in Autonomous Systems:
• Modeling, analysis, verification and maintenance
• Control algorithms and mechanisms
• Smart sensors and perception technologies
• Energy efficiency and sustainable computing
• Autonomous Decision-making
• Connectivity and communication architectures, and IoT integration
• Data analytics and machine learning techniques

2. Ethical Implications of Autonomous Systems:
• Privacy concerns in surveillance and civilian monitoring
• Bias and fairness in algorithmic decision-making
• Accountability and transparency of autonomous systems
• Social and psychological impacts on individuals and communities
• Legal and regulatory frameworks for autonomous technologies

3. Case Studies and Applications:
• Autonomous irrigation and precision agriculture
• Drone technology for surveillance, delivery, and exploration
• Smart city applications and urban planning
• Humanitarian uses of autonomous systems
• Challenges and opportunities in integrating autonomy into existing systems

4. Human-Autonomy Interaction:
• Designing user interfaces and experiences for effective human-autonomy collaboration
• Investigating methods for seamless integration of human intervention into autonomous systems
• Understanding cognitive and behavioral dynamics of human interaction with autonomous technologies
• Exploring shared decision-making frameworks and distributed control paradigms

Novel Research Questions, Methodological Enhancements, and Early Results

This workshop warmly welcomes visionary submissions that propose new dimensions and open research questions for the community to explore. We also welcome methodologies that push the boundaries of the state of the art, as well as early results that contribute to the ongoing development of autonomous systems.
