Novel Visualization Tools in Petroleum and Chemical Engineering

Editors: Yasin Hajizadeh, Mario Costa Sousa
University of Calgary

to be published by Springer 2012

#Book Rationale

The multimillion dollar oil, gas and chemical industries rely on extensive amount of data and complex simulation models for making investment decisions. In recent years, we have seen a tremendous increase in the application of state-of-the-art computational methods and data collection technologies in petroleum and chemical engineering fields. New concepts such as smart fields and real-time oil and gas reservoir management are opening their place in the engineering workflows in major energy companies. In these environments, there are several challenges with the data and computational models used to understand complex processes. Advanced data collection tools provide hundreds of measurements in real-time. It is extremely important to develop efficient visualization technologies to investigate these data for developing a solid understanding of the various processes in these industries. Another issue in this area is the different types and scales of data. For example, this range can vary between several centimetres (well logs) to several kilometers (seismic surveys).

On the other hand, with recent advances in computational power, the size of models used to study complex process in chemical and petroleum engineering has increased to several million and (recently billion) cells or segments. Efficient visualization of such large-scale models is one of the current challenges posed to engineers and decision makers. In some areas, we deal with multiple computational models to quantify the uncertainty and large number of models adds more complexity to the visualization task. Recent advances in visualization technologies in the computer science field have introduced the opportunity to tackle these challenges and bring added-value to petroleum and chemical industries. These new visualization tools can help the user to directly interact with data, discover patterns, highlight features based on time-varying trends, perform data correlation studies and quantify the uncertainties. Visualization techniques operating within this exploratory analysis framework will allow the user to have insights and will yield scientific and engineering breakthroughs.

This book will provide an overview of the recent advances in visualization technologies and their applications in chemical and petroleum engineering. The reader will enjoy from a wide range of applications and how these methods bring additional value to this community. This book also will be an interdisciplinary platform for computer scientists and professionals in the petroleum and chemical engineering community to develop new ideas and application areas in these fields.
