The Dpt. of Modern Literatures of the Universidad de la República announces its 12th international conference on literary and cultural relations across languages and hemispheres.
For over five centuries, due to Portuguese colonization, the Portuguese language has permeated numerous territories in America, Africa, and Asia, acquiring new tonalities in every chão it reaches and evolving over time through interactions with other languages, including indigenous languages particularly in Brazil, and crioulas. Portuguese is the primary language of literature produced in Lusophone countries and plays a secondary role in regions like Goa, Macao, and Uruguay, as well as in diasporic communities. Literature carves pathways for subjects and alterities. Over the past five centuries, literature in Portuguese has questioned as well as sparked a variety of reflections on identity, understood as an on-going, ever evolving process. This edition of Montevideana seeks to create a space for discussion and reflection on literature written in Portuguese, with a special emphasis on the relationship between literary creation and questions of identity. We request proposals of up to 500 words (plus references), in Portuguese or Spanish. Deadline: April 30th, 2024. Please send proposals as well as any questions to montevideana2024@gmail.com. The Montevideana Conference does not charge participant fees and is free and open to the public, per the tradition of Uruguayan public education. |
