CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS 2023 Carleton University Music and Culture Graduate Symposium

The Music and Culture Graduate Students’ Society of Carleton University is pleased to announce the call for submissions for its 2023 Symposium titled:

“More than Meets the Ear: Perspectives on Sound and Music”

This year’s theme, “more than meets the ear,” invites and encourages us to consider music and sound from various perspectives; prompting us to think about how music and sound have the capacity to challenge our expectations, transcend our existing knowledge, and manifest themselves in ways that offer diverse and meaningful socio-cultural connections. We encourage submissions of research papers and lecture-recitals dealing with a wide range of topics, including, but not limited to, music/sound as it relates to and/or intersects with:

Disability
Identity
Education
Decolonization
Media
Technology
Environment
Authenticity
Embodiment
Social justice, resistance, protest, politics, fascism, antifascism
Sound art and sound studies
Sensory experiences with sound and music
Gender studies
Performance studies
Cultural histories
Film music

This symposium is a hybrid event and will take place in-person on the Carleton University Campus and via the Zoom conferencing platform on the afternoon of Friday March 24th and during the day on Saturday March 25th. This year we are honoured to welcome Dr. Kyra Gaunt (University at Albany). Dr. Gaunt’s presentation examines how music reproduces racism and sexploitation online based on case studies from YouTube to Wikipedia. Applicants are asked to notify us about any accessibility needs they may have in submission emails, and we will make every effort to ensure that the symposium is accessible to all who have identified specific needs. All personal information will be viewed only by the MCGSS Program Committee and will remain confidential.

Please note that if you reside in the National Capital region, and your submission is accepted for presentation, you will be expected to present your paper in person at the symposium unless an exception has been requested and approved (please specify in the form below).

Please submit your paper or lecture-recital proposal via the following Google Form: https://forms.gle/MbNXnnXtELNR5pBGA

Submission Guidelines:

● Paper Presentation: 15 minutes + 5 minutes Q&A
○ Presentation Proposal: 250-300 word abstract, technology requirements (other than the standard provision of AV PowerPoint projection capability)
○ 150-word presenter bio

● Lecture-recital Presentation: 25 minutes + 5 minutes Q&A
○ Lecture-recital Proposal: 250–word description, technology requirements (other than the standard provision of AV PowerPoint projection capability), with a link to a sample of your compositional or performance work

Proposals are due by 11:59 pm on Sunday, February 26th, 2023.
Note that if you require a brief extension for the submission of your proposal, your request will be considered by the Program Committee if you email it directly to Justine Walker at justine.walker3@carleton.ca

All applicants will be notified via email by Monday, February 27th, and the final program will be posted by mid-March. If you have any questions about the Symposium, please email carleton.mcgss@gmail.com
