Dear Colleagues,
Predicted in 1977 and discovered in 1995, anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) has been recognized as a promising alternative to the conventional nitrification-denitrification processes in wastewater treatment. High efficiency, low resource/energy demand, and less biosludge product make anammox an ideal biological technology to apply in next-generation water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs), directly contributing to a circular economy by producing clean water, nutrients, renewable energy, and other valuable bio-based materials from wastewater. Extensive studies and continues efforts have been made to advance the understanding of the anammox process through cutting-edge experimental and computational (modeling) methodologies. Specifically, close collaboration between industry-academia communities enables the successful transfer of knowledge and skills from laboratory- and pilot-scale studies to full-scale application, resulting in the installation and operation of more than one hundred full-scale anammox plants around the world. This Special Issue will aim to present the latest findings/results, advanced experimental/analytical techniques, simulation/modeling methods, and valuable practical experience for enhancing the performance and stability of anammox in different wastewater streams with various nitrogen strengths. We welcome original and high-quality research articles, short communications, as well as technical perspectives, minireviews, and full-length reviews. Dr. Guangbin Li Guest Editor |
