Welcome!
We are delighted to welcome you to the 18th International Symposium on Experimental Robotics (ISER 2023). It will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand from 26th to 30th November 2023. ISER encourages submission of papers with validation of robotics theory and principles by physical experiments or new experimental paradigms and designs that facilitate theoretical advances.

About ISER
The International Symposium on Experimental Robotics is a series of bi-annual symposia, which have been held successively in Montréal (1989, Canada), Toulouse (1991, France), Kyoto (1993, Japan), Stanford (1995, USA), Barcelona (1997, Spain), Sydney (1999, Australia), Honolulu (2000, USA), Sant’Angelo (2002, Italy), Singapore (2004), Rio de Janeiro (2006, Brazil), Athens (2008, Greece), New Delhi & Agra (2010, India), Québec City (2012, Canada), Marrakech/Essaouira (2014, Morocco), Tokyo (2016, Japan), Buenos Aires (2018, Argentina) and Malta (2020, Italy).

Sponsored by the International Foundation of Robotics Research, the goal of ISER symposia is to provide a forum for research in robotics that focuses on the novelty of theoretical contributions validated by experimental results. The meetings are conceived to bring together, in a small group setting, researchers from around the world who are at the forefront of experimental robotics research. This unique conference presents the latest advances across various fields of robotics, with ideas that are not only conceived conceptually but also explored experimentally. Each symposium has a three to four-day program with a single track for presentations. The number of papers presented is small in order to maximize discussions of the presented work and interactions among participants. Each ISER Symposium also features outreach activities to the young generations of scientists and engineers in the host region and local cultural activities to facilitate understanding and appreciation of the unique heritage of the host region.

Transportation
Chiang Mai International Airport receives up to 28 flights a day from Bangkok, Thailand’s capital city and one of Asia’s busiest air transport hubs. International services also connect Chiang Mai with other regional centers, including cities in other Asian countries. Please refer to this page for a non-exhaustive list of available airlines and destinations: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiang_Mai_International_Airport.

In the heart of the city, the Meliá Chiang Mai is easily accessed from the airport, and is an approximately 15 minute drive by private transport.

As the conference coincides with local festivals Loy Krathong and Yi Peng, heavy traffic is expected and conference attendees should factor this into their travel plans.

Program
Sunday, 26th Nov

Welcome Reception
A welcome reception and a light dinner will be organized for all conference attendees at the Meliá Chiang Mai, including those who have accommodations elsewhere. This will take place at either the pool area or the sky bar.

Local Tour
ISER 2023 takes place during the Loy Krathong and Yi Peng festivals. There will be many unique local customs such as releasing floating lanterns into the sky and candle-lit boats into the Ping River.

Hence, local tours will be organized for conference attendees, which will also help attendees familiarize themselves with the area around the conference location.

About IFRR
The goal of the International Foundation of Robotics Research (IFRR) is to promote the development of robotics as a scientific field establishing the theoretical foundations and technology basis for its ever expanding applications, with emphasis on its potential role to benefit humans. The Foundation was formally established in 1986 following the success of a series of pioneering symposia that were conceived to provide the emerging community with a forum entirely devoted to all areas of robotics research.

The international dimensions of the Foundation were reflected in the broad composition of its Board of eighteen officers, equally distributed across the regions of Asia-Australia, Europe, and North America.

Through closer cooperation and coordination with other robotics conferences, societies, and publications, IFRR continues to expand its effort to promote the development and dissemination of research within our growing robotics community.
