Translating and the Computer 33 Conference – Call for Papers

The Hatton, London, 17th & 18th November 2011

This event brings together a diverse group of delegates, to gain new insights and brainstorm ideas on the use of information technology for translation. It covers the following areas:

language resources exchange
tools, technologies and standards
web-based collaboration models and tools
translation process control.
This call for papers invites you to submit abstracts of papers to be presented at the Conference. Talks should be slanted towards a practitioner's point of view, even when dealing with the latest product developments and theoretical research. The papers (and the presentations) should focus on the user aspects of translation or translation-related software. Presentations accompanied by demonstrations are especially welcome. The Conference is a meeting point for translation professionals from:

large international and multilateral institutions, such as those of the European Union and the United Nations System
translation agencies across the world
professional translators
tools and technology developers
researchers and academics.
Topics

The range of topics includes (but is not limited to):

Machine translation (MT) - related topics:
hybrid rule-based/statistical MT systems
general use of MT systems
controlled languages and their use in MT
synergy of MT with other language tools (CAT, TM, workflow management)
case-studies of cost-savings
portability of MT systems across languages and domains
MT for social networks.

Speech in the translation process:
use of speech recognition to dictate translation
use of speech recognition to transcribe audio originals and translations
speech recognition systems
use of speech recognition in TM or MT post-editing contexts
CAT tools including TM and various translation aids:
hybrid solutions in practice including post-editing
Terminology

Localisation:
translation/localisation in emerging markets/non-European/US context

Standards and sharing:
application of XML tools and XML standards
standardisation/normalisation in the industry
the future of TMX (Translation Memory eXchange), TBX (TermBase eXchange)
practical experiences in transfer of terminology data from one format to another (MultiTerm, NTRF, etc.)
exchange between terminology, lexicography and MT-lexicons
TM and terminology collection copyright Issues
wikis and other forms of massive online collaboration in translation
practical reports on crowd sourcing.

exact translation: problems using tools, requirements.

Submission Guidelines

Authors are required to submit an abstract of a MINIMUM of 500 words of the paper they would like to present, together with an outline of the structure of the paper and short biography.

Abstracts should be sent by EMAIL by the 17th June 2010 to submissions@aslib.com.

The abstracts will be considered by the Programme Committee

The authors of abstracts will be notified of acceptance or rejection of their submissions by 5th August 2011. Speakers' presentations must be submitted by 12th November 2011.

The deadlines are:

17th June 2011 - deadline for abstracts
5th August 2011 - all authors will be notified of decisions
10th October 2011 – deadline for papers to be included in the Proceedings
12th November 2011 - speakers’ presentations to be submitted
28th November 2011 - presentations posted on the conference web site in a password protected area
