FIRST INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON SEMANTIC BASED OPPORTUNISTIC DATA MANAGEMENT (SODM 2011)

Workshop held in conjunction with MDM 2011
6-9 June 2011, Lulea, Sweden

Workshop website: http://pamir.dia.uniroma3.it:8080/SODM2011/

IMPORTANT DATES
---------------
Paper (Poster) submission: February 25, 2011 (15h00 EDT)
Author notification: March 25, 2011
Camera-ready submission: April 1, 2011 (15h00 EDT)

WORKSHOP AIMS AND SCOPE
---------------------------
Pervasive and mobile computing has peculiarities -such as highly volatile connectivity, unexpected disconnections, location-dependency, reduced energy, storage and computational availability among others- making them different from traditional wired and dependable computing paradigms. Research challenges are thus posed and novel techniques are required in order to leverage resource discovery, matchmaking and reasoning for efficient and reliable applications and services in wireless environments.

It could be useful that large amount of disseminated data, annotated in a given machine understandable format (such as RDF, OWL), stored in RFID tags or cluster head sensors or even PDAs and mobile devices, are properly recomposed to enable semantic-based reasoning on a consistent and self-contained part of a given domain. In particular, effective methods for selecting on-the-fly suitable portions of knowledge available in a given context for drawing conclusions from a set of given facts are strongly required. Opportunistic data integration enables pieces of knowledge (coming from several autonomous and decentralized data sources) to be properly combined in order to (re)build a proper fragment of the knowledge available in a mobile ad-hoc scenario. In this way, inapplicable centralized knowledge bases, not-realistic in mobile and resource-constrained contexts could be avoided.

This paradigm is borrowed from the Semantic Web vision and adapting it to the Internet of Things as resulting from the integration and collaboration of a plethora of small entities each one providing and requiring a portion of knowledge and reasoning capabilities. According to this assumption, Semantic-based Opportunistic Data Management requires advanced and flexible information management models suitable for coping with unpredictability, decentralization and resource scarcity featuring ubiquitous computing.

The first edition of the International Workshop on “Semantic-based Opportunistic Data Management'' (SODM) will discuss about data management issues related to the Internet of Things and the relationships with other Semantic Web technologies, proposing new models, languages and applications.

TOPICS OF INTEREST
------------------
The SODM Workshop invites researchers, engineers, service developers to present methods, models, case studies, practical experiences and technologies. Topics of interest to this workshop include, but are not limited to:

- Languages, tools and methodologies for representing and managing Stream data
- Conversion of legacy data to semantic form

- Web Metadata semantics and Use
- Semantic Web information modeling concepts
- Database technologies for the Semantic Web
- Robust and scalable knowledge management on the Web
- Information extraction for the Semantic Web
- Ontology mapping, merging, and alignment
- Ontology modeling, reuse, extraction, and evolution
- Mobile Data search, integration, and analysis through the Semantic Web
- Query languages for ontologies
- Searching and Ranking ontologies
- Reasoning paradigms for Stream query languages
- Rule interchange formats and Rule markup languages
- User-friendly interfaces to query and reason on the Internet
- Ranked Keyword search on Stream data
- Adaptive Web systems and applications
- Semantic Web Services
- Semantic Annotation of Web Systems
- Managing pervasive data, sensor data streams and user devices
- Organization and Visualization of semantic data to support information management activities
- Mobile Semantic Web content creation and annotation
- Mashing up Semantic Web data Stream and processes

PAPER SUBMISSION
----------------
Authors are invited to submit original manuscripts, neither submitted nor accepted for publication in any other workshop, conference, or journal. They must be written in English, and formatted using the IEEE style. We provide two call for papers:

Research Paper. The suggested number of pages is 6, and the maximum number of pages is 8. Manuscripts not submitted in the IEEE style or having more than 8 pages will not be reviewed and thus automatically rejected. The final, camera-ready version must not exceed 6 pages to avoid page charges.

Poster Paper. The Poster session is an exciting and highly interactive way to demonstrate feasibility of research and to stimulate the discussion on future trends in the application of data management solutions in the context of the Internet of Things. Proposals should be focused on new modeling developments, advances in their application or innovative use of modeling techniques in such context. The session is not intended for the demonstration of commercial products. The number of pages of the contribution must be no more than 2 pages. This page limit includes all parts of the paper (i.e. title, abstract, body, and bibliography).

Every submitted paper will be carefully reviewed by at least three members of the Program Committee and reviews will be returned to the author(s) with comments to ensure the high quality of the accepted papers. Reviewers are not required to read the appendices and the paper should be intelligible without them. Authors are invited to send their manuscripts as an attachment (PDF/PS format) through the EasyChair system, http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=sodm2011. In case of any inquires, please do not hesitate to contact program committee chairs: dvr@....

PROCEEDINGS
-----------
The Workshop proceedings will be published by IEEE. Submission to the Workshop implies the willingness to subscribe and participate to the event for presenting the submitted work (i.e. attendance of at least one of the authors of accepted papers will be mandatory). Final versions of accepted papers must strictly adhere to the IEEE guidelines and must include a printable file of the camera-ready version, as well as all source files thereof. No changes to such formatting rules are permitted. Authors of accepted papers must also download and sign a copyright form that will be made available on the Web site of the conference.

Depending on the quality of the submissions, authors of selected papers may be invited to submit extended versions for publication in international journals.
