Overview

While the negative impact of COVID-19 pandemic is heavily felt in many aspects of our life, this has also manifested the real strength of mobile applications, communications and technologies. Various Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) allowing anywhere, anytime communication have indeed come as a great help for people who had no other choice during some extreme situations. We have seen even parents in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) speaking over mobile applications with their sons and daughters who are just outside the room or elsewhere. The health protocols and protective mechanisms have not allowed many to have a close-contact communication even at the last stage of someone’s life but apparently, just a simple mobile application made it possible to connect between people.

New remote healthcare and many other innovative remote mechanisms have been developed based on ICT within few months of the pandemic even though there were applications and technologies before the pandemic. Hence, it is understandable that there are various areas of improvements in such a mobile communication setting. For instance, someone informing his son about the PIN (personal identification number) or password for some bank account or ATM (automated teller machine) card to draw money for his treatment (while he is a COVID-19 patient in the ICU) must not be captured by a third-party and hence, such communication done in this way should be protected. There are various security, optimization, Quality of Service (QoS), and other aspects in such kind of connection establishment via mobile applications and technologies. In future, we may also face similar pandemic and this may not be the last one. Hence, the tools and technologies developed in this domain could also help in extreme situations in future, if not for normal situations to connect people.

The objective of this special issue is to compile the most recent advancements in these areas of mobile applications and ICT that help people connect with their peers, friends, family members, and others. Authors are supposed to report about their latest tools and technologies and what can come in future. Survey papers may or may not be considered depending on the suitability and depth of research done.

The topics for this special issue will cover (but it should NOT be considered exhaustive):
- Innovative development of Mobile Application Tools
- Mobile applications and their impact in connecting people
- Wireless technologies that support the mobile applications
- Quality of Service issues for anywhere, anytime communication
- Remote communication technologies for helping ordinary people to connect themselves
- Network formation for ad hoc communication support in extreme situations
- Security solutions for mobile and remote connections
- Optimization issues in mobile technologies
- Future and emerging technologies in connecting people via ICT
