ETRI Journal Special Issue on Realistic and Immersive Media Technologies

Immersive Media commonly refers to the type of audiovisual media that attempts to reflect the different characteristics of physical world to digital environment for providing users with the experience with the maximum sense of realism. This experience can be afforded with diverse environments ranging from large-scaled devices such as multiscreen to personalized VR and AR equipment. Within recent years, diverse technologies associated with immersive media has been actively explored and developed for providing a full 3D stereoscopic and 6DoF (degree of freedom) effects according to users’ arbitrary movement. In addition, various standard organizations are currently developing standards for distributing and supporting immersive contents over existing and future networks. By considering such trend, the current special issue is looking for papers dealing with, but not limited to, the following issues:

• Light field video capturing, display and applications
• Light field video processing
• Omnidirectional 360 VR video generation
• Omnidirectional 360 VR video processing
• Omnidirectional 360 VR video service system
• Omnidirectional 360 VR video representation
• Immersive video coding and transmission
• Quality measurement for immersive video
• Volumetric video capturing and reconstruction
• Deep learning based camera pose and depth estimation
• Deep learning based 3D reconstruction
• Coherent and Incoherent light-based hologram capturing
• CGH algorithms for different 3D imaging data
• Holographic display architecture and implementations
• SLM(Spatial Light Modulation) devices
• Hologram image quality measurement & evaluation metric
• Holographic data processing and compression
