Call For Papers

Online Conference
7th, 8th and 9th June 2021

https://sites.google.com/york.ac.uk/ventana3/home

In this edition, Ventana III aims to continue developing a critical discussion about Latin America and its relation to the rest of the world. This year, the organisation committee proposes to focus on the Glocal to reflect on the tensions between the local and external agents in Latin America.

The adjective Glocal is a multivalent term which is observed in various disciplines, contexts and systems. It can be concisely defined as “thinking global acting local”. Glocal has become a key concept usually employed by social sciences and humanities to think about the relation between the global and the local in a globalised world. Likewise, the Glocal is a fundamental notion for post-colonial theories so that its connection with Latin America is manifest and pertinent. For Diana Brydon, “the trend toward the local can represent a turn towards an intense engagement with the particular as retaining some autonomy from global currents, or it can mark a renewed awareness of how local and global are now intermeshed in ways we are still struggling to understand”.

We suggest two main approaches to this phenomenon. The first one refers to the various modes in which Latin American communities and individuals have reacted historically to globalisation’s external inputs from the conquest to the present. Thus, experiences of self-governance, women groups, social minorities, indigenous cooperatives, ecological and environmental groups, educational and artistic practise from non-European perspectives, and so forth, would be part of this approach.

The second perspective appeals to think of the future of Latin America. Jeremy Rifkin claims that as a consequence of the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, globalisation has finished so that we must think in terms of glocalisation. Since the world is facing one of the most dramatic and radical challenges of history, we invite people to reflect on how Latin America will confront the globalisation crisis predicted by several thinkers for the upcoming years from local initiatives.

Call for Papers and Workshops

We invite scholars and early-career researchers from the Arts and Humanities, social sciences, and other disciplines to partake through any of the two modalities we have considered this year: workshops and papers.

Because of the ongoing global pandemic, we have decided that this version of Ventana will take place online.

Workshops:

These workshop sessions aim to develop more dynamic, challenging, and focalised discussions on specific subjects of interest to the attendant public.

Applicants should submit a single document of 500 words, including the following points:

Title of the Workshop
A short description of the workshop describing the theme, methodology, implementation, type of activities planned, aims, research question, target audience and any specific technical requirement. (400 words)
3 to 5 Keywords
Monitoring team, including full names, affiliations, emails, and a brief biography (no more than 100 words) (Workshops can be run by one person or a team of up to 3 members)
Workshops must consider an online modality.
If a specific online platform is required to facilitate the workshop, this must be stated in the proposal.

Applications must be sent to conferenciaventana@gmail.com before the deadline scheduled for the 9th of April 2021.

If the proposal is accepted, the workshop session should have a duration of 2 hrs, considering a group of between 12-20 attendees. During that time, the workshop moderator will be able to introduce the subject, develop activities and lead the discussion on the main topic (a 15 minutes break must be considered).

Papers:
Applications must consist of a 250-word abstract, 3-5 keywords, a short biography and institutional affiliation, all integrated into one pdf or word file. This document must be sent to conferenciaventana@gmail.com before the deadline scheduled for the 9th of April 2021.

In the case of being accepted, speakers should consider between 15 and 20 minutes-long for their presentation.

Applications must be sent to conferenciaventana@gmail.com before the deadline scheduled for the 9th of April 2021.

Some topics for both papers and workshops could be (but not limited to):

Globalisation and development
Feminism in Latin-America
Civil society and social movements
Ethnic groups and minorities
Democracy and civic participation
Security, conflicts and justice
Environment, landscape and natural resources
Education
Arts, culture and history

Any further questions should be addressed to Yael López yalt500@york.ac.uk or Javier Montalvo jam603@york.ac.uk

Publishing of the papers and workshops

Ventana III conference has made a partnership with the Academic journal Tensões Mundiais. For that purpose, a selection of the best papers as well as the workshops’ main results might be published in the journal after an editorial process. Further information will be provided at due time.

Funding and Financial Information

Ventana III does not consider any funding or economic backing for attendees, workshop monitors, nor speakers. Nonetheless, we are willing to offer support if people ask for acceptance letters or any other certificate necessary to apply for external funding.
