First settled over 2000 years ago, contemporary Beijing is now an immense metropolis, home to 17 million people. The capital of the People's Republic of China, Beijing is also one of China's most important centers of arts and culture, and was the host of the 2008 Olympic Games. In Beijing you can experience ancient China's imperial splendor, as well as modern China's kinetic buzz. Explore Beijing's early 15th century Forbidden City, the imperial palace of China's Ming and Qing dynasties for almost 500 years, or visit Wangfujing Street for some of the best shopping and snacks in Beijing. Attend a Beijing Opera, sample the delicious Mandarin cuisine, wander a classical garden, or take part in Beijing's vibrant nightlife. Whichever China you want to discover, you will find it in Beijing.
