Recent Advances in Image & Video Processing Technologies

The International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), sponsored by the IEEE Signal Processing Society, is the premier forum for the presentation of technological advances and research results in the fields of theoretical, experimental, and applied image and video processing. ICIP-2011, the 18th in the series that has been held annually since 1994, will bring together leading engineers and scientists in image and video processing from around the world. Research frontiers in fields ranging from traditional image processing applications to evolving multimedia and video technologies are regularly advanced by results first reported in ICIP technical sessions. For ICIP 2011 as well as the general topics commonly used, emphasis will also be placed on a series of special Belgian flavored themes.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

Image/video coding and transmission: Still image coding, video coding, stereoscopic and 3-D coding, distributed source coding, image/video transmission over wireless networks

Image/video processing: Image filtering, restoration and enhancement, image segmentation, video segmentation and tracking, morphological processing, stereoscopic and 3-D processing, feature extraction and analysis, interpolation and super-resolution, motion detection and estimation, implementation and systems

Image formation: Biomedical imaging, remote sensing, geophysical and seismic imaging, optimal imaging, synthetic-natural hybrid image systems

Image scanning, display, and printing: Scanning and sampling, quantization and halftoning, color reproduction, image representation and rendering, display and printing systems, image quality assessment

Image/video storage, retrieval, and authentication: Image and video databases, image indexing and retrieval, video indexing, retrieval and editing, multimodality image/video indexing and retrieval, authentication and watermarking

Applications: Biomedical sciences, geosciences and remote sensing, document image processing and analysis, other applications

Special Themes for ICIP 2011 - Brussels

Astronomy: The Big Bang theory (or the primeval atom hypothesis), at the heart of any modern astronomical models, is due to the independent works of Alexander Friedman and Georges Lemaître. Lemaître (1894-1966) was a Belgian Roman Catholic priest, professor of physics and astronomer at the Catholic University of Leuven (UCL/KUL). For this 18th ICIP Conference, the General Committee wishes to pay tribute to Lemaitre's work by emphasizing the importance of Image Processing/Restoration/Analysis in Astronomy. Expected astronomical applications are for instance, Radio-Astronomy, Multispectral Imaging, X-Ray/Infrared/Gamma Sensing, Onboard Satellite Imagers, Solar Physics, Cosmic Microwave Background Analysis, ...

Cultural Heritage: Culture is all around us, expressing ideas, thoughts and feelings through different means such as paintings, sculptures, architecture, photography, movies, literature, etc. In the 1400’s Belgium was placed on the world map of pictorial art by the Flemish Primitives such as Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, and many more, who brought details alive. In the 16th century the torch was passed to Pieter Bruegel specialized in peasant scenes and then followed by Pieter Paul Rubens, Antoon van Dyck and Jacob Jordaens. The next important generation was found in the 19-20th century and represented by James Ensor and the masters of surrealism René Magritte and Paul Delvaux, while today we can ‘experience’ the creations of Jan Fabre. The heritage that survives from the past is often unique and irreplaceable, which places the responsibility of preservation on the current generation. Digitalization of these masterpieces using different imaging modalities plays nowadays an important addition in conservation and restoration, but also offers new insights and possibilities in art analysis. Because of Belgium’s rich cultural heritage, we therefore chose within ICIP to welcome all contributions in this application field of image processing.

Human Media Interaction: As Ed Schlossberg once stated : "True interactivity is not about clicking on icons or downloading files, it is about encouraging communication". This was enounced more than ten years ago. Today, we live within (sometimes even by and for) communication, multimedia interactivity has been placed at the center of the user experience and gratifying man-machine interaction is finally becoming a reality, with a bright and ever-expanding future ahead. Huge leaps forward have been taken in Human-Media Interactivity: mostly technological, but also design-wise and paradigm-wise. Image processing being one of the pillars of this interactivity, it has been chosen as one the main themes of ICIP 2011. Among others, we expect submissions addressing areas such as Man-Machine Interaction, Gait analysis (and biometrics in general), or multimodal interfaces.
