Call For Papers

Following the challenge posed to researchers and scholars in its first edition, the II International Congress of Local History proposes to continue the objectives then outlined, sought to promote a space of interdisciplinary and comparative sharing and reflection through the debate around problems, approaches, methodologies and research practices, with a view to enhancing the importance of local history in contemporary historiography. Likewise, its purpose is to open space for debate around its concept, problematizing an issue that is to be clarified in Portuguese historiography.

Local history, since the middle of the nineteenth century, has aroused the interest of researchers and inquisitors who study the past of a certain region or community with the purpose of restoring collective and individual memory. At the scientific level, this reality is manifested in the multiplication of master’s theses and doctoral theses on themes related to local history, fostering a wealth of innovative scientific knowledge and a new wave of historians interested in working on themes from different regions.

This II International Congress of Local History, not being the exclusive focus, intends to create the conditions for a more in-depth reflection and a permanent dialogue between the local historical investigation and the communities where these investigations are inserted. It also seeks to explore the issue of memory recovery and the different forms of retribution that have existed on the part of the academic community.

Call for Papers

The opening of communication proposals for all stakeholders aims at disseminating local and regional historical work and the sharing of challenges as well as obstacles encountered by researchers throughout their research process. In the same way, it seeks to reflect on what Local History is and its diverse potentialities, in particular its close relationship with the communities it addresses.

The proposals of communication on Local History in the contemporaneity can be conceived around the following thematic axes, without excluding others correlated:

Reflections on the theory and methodology of local history;
What it means and represents this discipline;
History and Community;
The importance of local history in secondary and higher education;
Municipalities and Local Power;
