Call For Papers

In analyzing the processes of globalization in the contemporary era, literature has demonstrated the importance of crossing and confronting various theoretical and methodological approaches in order to understand this phenomenon and the role of the sea in the process. Such is the case of Transnational and Global History, connected with the theories of cooperation and self-organization, which highlighted the determinants of globalization, adding to the role of States and institutions, various spaces and actors that played a relevant role in promoting networks that have crossed each other, and which have sometimes been reconfigured under various scales, while cooperating with official institutions and agents.

The sea, port cities and all interconnected agents, occupy a prominent place in the understanding of the globalization process, building, at different scales, a unique and complex identity of the maritime world in the modern and contemporary periods. During the 20th century, research identified multiple processes of deglobalization/globalization, with a reconfiguration of national and international strategies towards the exploration of the maritime world, with the consequent affirmation of new world powers.

The analysis of science, technics, technology and its relationship with heritage, are of a fundamental nature in the explanation of these processes and in the understanding of Maritime History. The invention, innovation, production and circulation of scientific and technological knowledge and the implementation of new techniques and methodologies were essential in the transformation of infrastructures, means of transportation and communications, as well as in redefining the business strategies of shipping and shipbuilding companies, and in reshaping national and international relations and networks in different political, economic, social, cultural and scientific contexts. Several protagonists and institutions generated and circulated science specifically applied to the maritime sector, thus creating a scientific culture of the sea.

The relationship between port cities and maritime heritage has in the meantime proved to be one of the most effective strategies for reorienting and reconnecting communities to their coastal areas. This heritage, endowed with a language of its own, presents immense socioeconomic and cultural potential, through the multiple processes of refunctionalization and reappropriation that are imposed on it.

This conference invites the scientific community to present papers and debate on issues related to science, technology and heritage in the maritime world, framed by the phenomenon of deglobalization/ globalization; to discuss its main spaces and actors; and to analyze national and international public policies under the scope of their multi scaled (from the local to the international) in a context of wars, crises, economic growth and colonization / decolonization.
