Queen Empress Maria Theresia, the only female ruler and one of the longest reigning rulers of the Habsburg Monarchy, is three hundred years on still considered one of the most popular and prominent Austrian monarchs. She is especially well remembered for the many significant reforms she implemented to strengthen the bureaucratic and military efficiency of her dominions.

This conference intends to re-examine, within the broader context of the Habsburg Monarchy, Maria Theresia’s reforms and politics in the Croatian lands under her rule: Civil Croatia and the Military Frontier. What were the major aspects of her government, how were the reforms received and implemented, and what was their impact and legacy? Observing these questions, the conference will focus on three major themes: accession and war; reforms from above and below; and political and family networks in the service of the Landesmutter.

The conference aims to bring together scholars, graduate students and early career researchers in the areas related to these themes in order to share and discuss views and research experiences.

We are inviting proposals for 20-minute conference papers on any of the aforementioned themes. Papers proposals and synopses of up to 100 words, accompanied by a short biography should be submitted to Alexander Buczynski (alexander.buczynski@gmail.com) and Vedran Klaužer (mlwicb.maria.theresia2017@gmail.com) by Friday 16 December.

There is no conference fee for attendees. Free accommodation for paper presenting authors will be provided by the conference organisers. Speakers that need a reimbursement of their travel expenses are kindly requested to inform us about the estimated price. Travel and accommodation expenses of participants not presenting a paper will not be compensated but we are willing to assist in finding good and affordable lodgings.
