CALL FOR PAPERS

5th HPI Symposium "Operating the Cloud" (OtC)
November 14, 2017, Potsdam, GERMANY

http://hpi.de/otc

========================================================================

The Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) invites to the fifth edition of the yearly scientific symposium on the topic “Operating the Cloud”. The Future SOC Lab, a cooperation of HPI and the industrial partners Dell EMC, Fujitsu, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and the SAP Innovation Center Network provides researchers with free of charge access to a complete infrastructure of powerful hardware and software. As cloud computing is one of the main research areas at the HPI Future SOC Lab, the lab hosts a scientific workshop that focuses on the area of operations within the context of cloud computing.

Cloud computing is experiencing a growth in attention world-wide. The necessity emerges from ever increasing amounts of data that must be stored and computed by companies of almost any area of business. Additionally, even in our daily private lives we utilize cloud services to synchronize files, keep track of our appointments, etc. However, we are still observing a gap between results of academic research and practical implementations cloud operators use. It is our goal to provide a persistent platform for representatives of academia and industry to bridge this gap.

The symposium aims at connecting industry and academia by inviting speakers and calling for paper presentations. On this occasion, we seek for research papers and practitioners' reports in the fields of operating, administrating, and utilizing cloud systems. Please submit your contribution to the electronic submission system we use. Accepted submissions will be presented at the symposium in Potsdam. "Operating the Cloud" aims to present a versatile compilation of talks which allow a deep exchange of experience and knowledge.

As every year the cloud symposium will be co-located with the Future SOC Lab Day of Fall 2017.

### Topics

We seek submissions from industry and academia. Topics include but are not limited to:

* Cloud application scalability and availability
* Capacity planning for cloud applications
* Tenant placement
* Dynamic capacity and performance management
* Cloud-ilities (scalability, availability, reliability, elasticity)
* Physical and virtual hardware on demand
* Network function virtualization (VFN) and software-defined networking (SDN)
* Fog & Edge Computing
* Data Science & Machine Learning
* Cloud middleware frameworks
* Cloud applications performance and monitoring
* Big data cloud services
* Security and cyber security in the cloud
* Cloud optimization and automation
* Global data centers and disaster tolerance
* Combining public and private cloud and on-premise solutions

### Submission

Authors are invited to submit high quality unpublished research work that should not exceed 14 pages (including all text, references, appendices, and figures) conforming to the HPI technical report style (https://www.dcl.hpi.uni-potsdam.de/media/hpitr_otc.zip). Papers must be written in English and must be submitted in PDF format using EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=otc2017). Submitted papers will receive at least three reviews. Accepted papers will be published after the workshop as an HPI technical report. Submission implies the willingness of at least one of the authors to attend the workshop and present the paper.

### Important Dates

* Submission Deadline: September 1, 2017
* Author notification: October 16, 2017
* Camera-ready version: October 27, 2017
* Scientific symposium: November 14, 2017

### Venue

The HPI Future SOC (Service-Oriented Computing) Lab is a cooperation of the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) and the industrial partners Dell EMC, Fujitsu, SAP and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE). Its mission is to enable and promote exchange and interaction between the research community and the industrial partners.

The Lab provides researchers with free of charge access to a complete infrastructure of state of the art hard- and software. This infrastructure includes components, which might be too expensive for an ordinary research environment, such as servers with up to 64 cores. The offerings address researchers particularly from but not limited to the areas of computer science and business information systems. Main areas of research include cloud computing, parallelization, and In-Memory technologies.

You are welcome to hand in a project proposal and to apply for the usage of the lab’s resources. More information: Call for Projects (https://hpi.de/en/research/future-soc-lab/project-steps/call-for-projects.html).
