Knowledge Engineering
Knowledge engineering is an evolutionary process of engineering artifacts and using them to gain new understandings. These new understandings are then used to further engineer or modify artifacts and the process continues. Knowledge engineering in global software development is being increasingly researched by the software and the knowledge management communities. To implement a good knowledge engineering strategy in a global software development environment, organizations have to overcome issues which have been identified in many previous studies. These issues make global software distribution a difficult and complex task. The effective and explicit engineering of knowledge had been presented as a key factor in the survival of companies in current business environments.
This special issue seeks the best papers in the field of knowledge engineering in global software development. It aims to present current challenges and research frontiers.
We solicit original, previously unpublished papers on topics over the whole spectrum of knowledge engineering in global software development (KE in GSD), in the context of distributed software engineering and knowledge management. The papers must have a clear 'KE in GSD' focus. Such efforts include, how to relate and bridge KE and GSD.

Specific Topics of Interest
architectural knowledge management
economics-driven knowledge management
knowledge discovery services and tools
workflows and decision making including experiences with Wiki support
skills management and transfer of knowledge
knowledge management in global software product line engineering
automated extraction, collection, and abstraction of knowledge from software archives
application of ontologies
empirical analysis of globally distributed development project performance
knowledge management issues in agile and iterative approaches
portals and services for knowledge management on the semantic web
software process simulation of emergent issues
Further topics of interest include:
engineering knowledge
knowledge acquisition/representation/dissemination/usage
knowledge work practices

mechanisms of project management in global software development
the role of software internationalisation and localisation in global software development
specification of conventions for constructing and using knowledge in global software development

Submission Details
There is no a priori limit on manuscript length, but manuscripts over 12000 words (approx. 30 pages) should be accompanied by sound justification for the length. Figures and tables count for 200 words each. In scope articles will be peer-reviewed, and are subject to editing for magazine style, clarity, organisation, and space. Wiley-Blackwell reserves the right to edit the title of all submissions.
Articles should have a practical research orientation, and be written in a style accessible to researchers and practitioners. Overly complex, purely research-oriented, or theoretical treatments are not appropriate.

Expert Systems is a member of the Committee on Ethical Publication (http://cope.org). The Journal's policy and procedures for ethical publishing are contained in the article: http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/117980901/abstract. By submitting their manuscript, authors are deemed to have read and to have agreed to abide by those guidelines. Articles should be novel. Wiley-Blackwell does not re-publish material published previously in other venues, including other periodicals and formal conference/workshop proceedings, whether previous publication was in print or in electronic form. The journal expects at least 30% new important intellectual material over any previously published article.Submission of a paper implies that the work described has not been published before; that it is not under consideration for publication anywhere else; that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities - tacitly or explicitly - at the institute where the work has been carried out; that the work conforms to the ethical guidelines published by http://ethicalpublication.org). The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.
