Call For Papers

This conference aims to identify and analyze conflicting issues of legal concern, which complicate relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The questions put forward are: What is the current situation after one year of the announcement of the verdict of the European Court? Which are the conflicting issues? To what extent does the case of Chiragov against Armenia impact the political development? Which are possible ways out of this predicament? What is the state of legal research on sensitive issues of territorial disputes comparable to the case of Chiragov against Armenia?

By bringing together legal experts and specialists from the Caucasus, Europe, and Switzerland, this conference represents a pioneering endeavour to approach these questions in a comprehensive manner and put them into new perspective. Apart from papers dealing with more general issues of historiography and the interplay of politics, this conference also seeks to identify and address some of the most contested issues before the European Court on Human Rights. This call for papers therefore looks for experts who have done research on one of the following topics:

Extraterritorial Applicability of the European Convention outside High Contracting parties – the case of Chiragov against Armenia vs. Sargasyan against Azerbaijan.
Power politics within the context of interstate conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh: Geostrategic & Economic Interests.
European Position – Russian involvement.
What is the current situation after one year of the announcement of the verdict of the European Court? "Myths" and facts of the case Chiragov against Armenia.

We welcome proposals from senior as well as younger researchers from all over Europe, but especially
encourage PhD students and Postdocs from the Caucasus region to apply. Please submit your application
via Email (including a half-page outline of your proposed paper, a CV and list of publications) by
July 31, 2016, to:
