IEEE Workshop on Device-to-Device Communications in Cloud Radio Access Networks (DC-RAN)
In conjunction with the IEEE 27th Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor, and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC)
Sunday, September 4th, 2016
Valencia Conference Centre, Valencia, Spain
Scope and Topics of Interest
The amount of mobile data traffic has increased enormously as mobile networks grow densely with the massive growth in wireless connected devices. This trend is expected to accelerate in the future, as new ubiquitous smart mobile devices provide an excellent platform for mobile users to engage with each other wirelessly through interactive applications, which will impose energy consumption and the use of wireless bandwidth to guarantee high level of quality of service (QoS). Therefore, it can be envisioned that the fifth generation (5G) networks need to meet the high throughput demands stemmed from increased user densification and bandwidth-hungry applications, while at the same time reducing energy consumption.
Cloud-Radio Access Network (C-RAN) and device-to-device (D2D) communication are such two potential technological elements to meet the performance demand for 5G networks. C-RAN forms a cloud computing-based infrastructure by putting together baseband unites (BBUs) and connecting them, through optical fibres, with simple function based remote radio heads (RRHs) to communicate with mobile user equipements (UEs). This infrastructure could enable powerful processing capability to efficiently serve UEs. Device-to-device (D2D) communication allows direct data transmission between UEs in proximity, which can not only provide high data rate and low packet delay, but also is with low energy/cost. The integration of D2D with C-RAN can exploit the central processing capability of C-RAN to further explore the advantage of direct D2D communications by offloading traffice from BBUs and centrally managing resources for D2D communications, so that wireless spectrum can be used more efficiently with QoS being guaranteed for applications. Moreover, enabling mobile cloud networking (MCN) in C-RAN can offload computationally heavy tasks running in mobile applications to clones, which can further reduce energy consumption for D2D. However, the integration also faces challenges from the overhead of central control signalling between D2D communications and the BBUs and delay caused by the fronthaul of C-RAN.
The Workshop is dedicated to the debate of challenges and opportunities concerning integrating of D2D communication with C-RAN infrastructure and explore efficient solutions towards 5G. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
• Proximity-based device detection
• Resource management for D2D communications
• Content distribution and caching under D2D communications
• 60 GHz D2D communication
• Spectrum efficiency, network efficiency and energy efficiency in cloud-RAN • C-RAN technology
• Device vs C-RANcontrolled link establishment
• Traffice offloading from C-RAN to D2D communications
• Communication between device and the C-RANinfrastructure
• Integration of D2D and MCN
The Keynote Speakers
Dr Philippe Chanclou from Orange, France
Prof. Shaoyi Xu, Beijing Jiangtong University, Beijing, China.
