We are pleased to announce a call for papers to be featured in the second issue of The Quiet Corner Interdisciplinary Journal, housed in the University of Connecticut’s Department of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages. For this issue, titled “What to Make of ‘Nation?”, we welcome article submissions that treat the often-problematic complexities of nation-centric constructs such as nationhood, nationalism, and national identity, as well as counter-constructs rooted in discourses of globality, postcolonialism, universality, human rights, and other bustling spheres of critical inquiry. This issue aims to complicate the very idea of nation by interrogating the limitations of its political, geographical, and socio-cultural dimensions. We invite authors to explore ‘nation’ in any of its linguistic, literary, and artistic manifestations. Submissions might also investigate currents of otherness and togetherness as they relate to national identity, language, and citizenship. In recognition of the complex dynamics underpinning our contemporary global reality, this issues strives to promote inquiry into the deeply entrenched concept of nation, its history, and its points of intersection with other contentious constructs including race, gender, and class. We thus encourage authors to participate in a complex dialogue with the broad spectrum of post/sub/trans/inter/supra/infra/counter/national discourses.

Relevant themes and topics may include but are not limited to:
● Citizenship, identity politics and nationalism
● Diaspora, borders, imagined communities and migration
● Human rights, empathy, biopolitics, ecocentrism, and politics of oppression
● Postcolonialism, transnationalism, and posthumanism
● Racism, nativism, populism, and subaltern studies
● Neoliberalism, globalization/globality, and network structures
● Narrative and creative cultural production



Submission Guidelines

Before you begin, please be sure you have the following items:
* Article Title
* Abstract (separate from the article body)
* Keywords for your article (optional)
* Article in one of the following formats: Microsoft Word, or RTF.
*Then visit our webpage, create a Digital Commons account, and submit your paper.

Articles must be submitted without a title page, abstract, or page numbers. These will be provided by the system. This is especially important so that you do not include any identifying information about the authors, as the article you submit will be sent to reviewers.


In addition, submissions must be original works produced by graduate-level students. We welcome submissions of papers in multiple languages including without limitation: English, Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, Russian, Bulgarian, Italian, Slovenian. Interested parties must follow MLA formatting guidelines: double-space the text on 8.5 x 11 paper. Use Times New Roman font. The font size should be 12 pt and set the margins to 1 inch on all sides. Submit works of approximately 15-20 pages. We prefer essays of this length, but will not turn away exceptional works outside these margins.
 Please note: we do not accept concurrent submissions or submissions that have been previously published.
