The 3rd Mediterranean Conference on Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence (MedPRAI-2019) has been held in Istanbul, Turkey on December 22-23, 2019. The event is aimed at providing an interdisciplinary forum of discussion to share the recent advancements in different areas of pattern recognition and artificial intelligence. The conference, although primarily targeting the Mediterranean region, will also be open to researchers from all over the world and is intended to be held annually in one of the Mediterranean countries.

Since the first edition, MedPRAI has represented an international meeting place in the world of research in the field of pattern recognition and artificial intelligence involving national and international institutions and academia in a discussion on the state-of-the-art concerning issues. Authors of selected high-quality papers from the conference related to multimedia will be invited to submit extended versions of their original papers (50% extensions of contents of the conference paper) and contributions under the following conference topics:

• Statistical, structural and syntactic pattern recognition for multimedia systems
• Neural networks for multimedia systems
• Machine learning for multimedia systems
• Data mining for multimedia systems
• Image coding and processing for multimedia systems
• Shape and texture analysis for multimedia systems
• Computer vision for multimedia systems
• Speech recognition for multimedia systems
• Music analysis for multimedia systems
• Information retrieval for multimedia systems
• Other PRAI based multimedia system applications

Submission Guidelines:

Authors should prepare their manuscript according to the Instructions for Authors available from the Multimedia Tools and Applications website. Authors should submit through the online submission site at https://www.editorialmanager.com/mtap/default.aspx and select“SI 1186 - Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence based Multimedia Systems and Applications” when they reach the “Article Type” step in the submission process. Submitted papers should present original, unpublished work, relevant to one of the topics of the special issue. All submitted papers will be evaluated on the basis of relevance, significance of contribution, technical quality, scholarship, and quality of presentation, by at least three independent reviewers. It is the policy of the journal that no submission, or substantially overlapping submission, be published or be under review at another journal or conference at any time during the review process.

The special issue will consider papers extending previously published conference papers, provided the journal submission presents a significant contribution beyond the conference paper. Authors must explain in the introduction to the paper the new contribution to the field made by the submission, and the original conference publication should be cited in the text. Note that neither verbatim transfer of large parts of the conference paper nor wholesale reproduction of already published figures is acceptable.
