PANEL COORDINATOR : Aliaksandr Piahanau (piahanau@gmail.com )

Paper proposals are welcomed for the panel “Central Europe in the politics of great powers in 1914–1945” at the 5th International Congress of the Belarusian Studies, which will take place in Kaunas (Lithuania) on 2-4 October 2015. Proposals should be submitted by 18 May 2015.

The founding idea of this panel is that in the first half of the 20th century, Middle -or Central - Europe, repeatedly set the stage for great power rivalry and conflict. During the period, that Charles de Gaulle and Winston Churchill were the first to call “the Second Thirty Year War” and that included the Great War, the interwar years and World War II, Middle Europe has become the target of covert or direct expansion and carried important implications for the national and imperial objectives of great powers. Yet, the topic of great power meddling in Middle Europe in 1914–1945 still offers numerous unresearched perspectives, including a more comprehensive and comparative perspective.

This panel is aimed to unite researchers, who are interested in the topic of Great Power policies in Middle Europe between 1914 and 1945. The core group of this panel is formed of historians cooperating on the volume “Great Power Policies Towards Middle Europe, 1914–1945”. At the same time, the panel is opened for other researchers, who are welcomed to submit their abstracts. English is the working language of the panel.

The Congress of Belarusian Studies in Kaunas is the biggest scientific event for Belarusian scholars in Humanities and traditionally it hosts more than 300 researchers from Belarus and other Central and Eastern European countries.
If you wish to take part in the panel, please submit an application form before 18 May 2015 (including your paper proposal from 2000 to 4000 characters), following this link (NB: under the point 10 (Disciplinary area), please mark “International Relations and Foreign Policy”):
