For the 5th iteration, the SP’17 call for proposals is looking for the most innovative, impactful, and market-feasible submissions within the solution framework of emerging smart buildings and cities. SP’17 brings together researchers and developers from industry and the academic world to report and more importantly debate on the latest scientific and technical innovations on the application of energy-efficient buildings (EeB) and smart home, community, or grid implementations.
The 5th annual Sustainable Places International Conference (SP’17), sponsored by the RESILIENT and PERFORMER (FP7) European projects, and is being hosted by TEESSIDE UNIVERSITY (TU) in Middlesbrough, UK who will offer a visit to their new off-shore wind farm.

The 2017 Sustainable Places international conference at Teesside University  will be the 5th iteration of the smart city and smart building stakeholder collaboration platform proven to further commercial, scientific, and technological advancements across interdisciplinary fields. The SP event series at inception was facilitated to support the 7 technology-clusters defined by the EU according to the construction-related research and innovation value chain from the EeB PPP Roadmap (Design, Technology Building Blocks, Advanced materials and nanotechnology, Construction process, Energy performance monitoring & management, ICT and BIM), which illustrate the diverse innovation approaches and the importance of embracing all aspects of the building and construction sectors. 

 
 
Socio-Technical & Socio-economic themes:
SP’17 seeks high-level contributions related to innovative business, market, stakeholder engagement, and technical models across interdisciplinary fields. Related stakeholders will be rewarded with a better understanding of the potential and challenges of the new technology, approach, or business model. Since it has become clear that smart buildings and cities are now considered as a key stakeholder of the emerging smart grids, SP now embraces the important cross-sector linkages. Accepted contributions will be along the following tracks, and focused on the all-encompassing sustainability issues of buildings, districts, and cities. This is not an exhaustive or restrictive list of topics, but specific areas on interest for SP’17 include:
Innovative business models & challenges of a circular, data-driven, multi-sided economy
Innovative low-carbon/building-integrated technologies & approaches for DER uptake
Data models, semantics, mobility, interoperability, and standardization
Modeling and simulation, performance monitoring, automation, and control
Pilots & evaluation frameworks for smart buildings & cities design, automation, and control Security & privacy methodologies or models for innovative Decision Support Systems

The types of SP'17 contributions should be limited to one or more of the following categories, with at least one author of accepted contributions being required to attend the event:
Presentation (20’ PPT)
A 20-minute long presentation on any project or initiative within the conference topics as delivered by one of the authors, to be showcased during a thematic session at the conference.

Paper & Presentation (20’ PPT + 8-page full paper)
A 20-minute long presentation + full paper on mature research results that if accepted will become an 8-page scientific paper (+/- 4,000 words) published in the conference proceedings, potentially a special journal edition, & to be showcased during a thematic session at the conference. One author must attend SP’17.

Workshop (’90 or ‘180 minutes)
A 90’ or 180’ session designed to engage speakers and attendees in a productive interaction and to produce specific outcomes or demonstrate interactive results. Methodology, names of chairs/attendees and expected outcomes should be highlighted in the abstract of the proposed contribution. Longer sessions will be considered if relevant to the final SP’17 technical program.

Keynotes, Posters & Media (Full visibility)
Scientific or technical poster contributions will be presented in the exhibition hall and potentially a dedicated session will be held for dedicated explanations. Approximately 150 attendees will have visibility, and relevant new media installations are welcome as well. Additionally, keynote speaker proposals are welcome and shall be considered by the SP2017 organizing committee
