Call For Papers

We would like to invite you to submit a position paper (up to 4 pages)
to the BooksOnline'08 Workshop, presenting your views and insights into
important issues and opportunities around large collections of on-line
books.

*Goals*
-------
Focusing on opportunities for innovation and challenges that are
presented by large online collections of digital books, this workshop
aims to bring together researchers and industry practitioners, in
Information Retrieval, Digital Libraries, eBooks, Human Computer
Interaction, Publishing industry and on-line book services. The goal of
the workshop is to map out the agenda for digital book research for the
next 5 years.

We would like to invite you to take part in the workshop to:
* Discuss new challenges and opportunities presented by large online
collections of digital books
* Create partnerships with researchers, libraries, publishers, and
online information service providers
* Establish a common understanding of basic concepts, usage scenarios,
available technologies, and practical constraints
* Exchange data about any aspect of books online: adoption, collections,
economic information, etc.
* Map out a comprehensive agenda for digital book research that takes
into account requirements from multiple perspectives.

*Workshop Format*
-----------------
This one day workshop will include presentations, parallel break-out
sessions, and a panel session focused on findings and recommendations.
The core activity will be breakout brainstorming sessions on selected
topics. Each group will focus on particular aspects and report back
their findings and recommendations during the panel session.

*Topics of interest*
-------------------
All participants are expected to submit a short position paper (up to 4
pages) that describes pressing issues, opportunities for innovation,
case studies of ongoing efforts, or ideas for initiatives involving
digital books. Example topics include but are not limited to:
* Usage scenarios and user expectations from digital book services
* Unique properties of digital books, including variety of
formats, content, and usage scenarios
* Current state-of-the-art in online book services and visions
for the future
* Issues in the user interface design
* Support a variety of tasks and usage scenarios (active
reading and learning, collection browsing, etc.)
* Hardware and software designs of digital book readers.
* Definition of retrieval tasks and evaluation criteria
* Resource discovery of digitized books, born-digital content,
and a relat* Search over OCR content, specific genre, and hybrid
document formats, etc.
* Definition of user tasks and objectives: known item search,
serendipitous information discovery, virtual bookshelves, etc.
* Relevance criteria and evaluation methodologies for online
book services.
* Book services as part of the on-line services ecosystem
* Relation of books search and other on-line services (e.g.,
advertisement, shopping, etc.)
* Integration of book-search facilities and social networks
comprising authors, publishers, distributors, and consumers.
* Implication of copyright and user privacy issues on the
availability of test collections for research.

Position papers will be reviewed by the Programme Committee to identify
key themes and outline topics for the workshop discussions. Some of the
authors may be asked to present on specific topics and perspectives to
inspire the Workshop discussions and facilitate break-out sessions.

Accepted papers will be published in the CIKM conference proceedings by ACM.

*Paper Submission*
------------------
The deadline for submitting position papers is July 15, 2008. We expect
submissions in English, up to 4 pages in length.

Please follow the formatting requirements as per the ACM templates,
using the "Option 2" style. This is also the style that will be required
for final papers. Papers must be submitted as PDF files.

To submit a paper, please go to the BooksOnline'08 Easychair submission
site. You will be asked to create a usage account before you can submit
the paper. If you are already registered as a PC member for
BooksOnline'08, you can submit your paper through that account.

The programme committee will provide feedback on your paper by August 5,
2008. We expect camera ready versions of the papers by August 15, 2008.
