Important Update: COSTA 2021 will be Virtual
We welcome you to join us online on Monday and Tuesday, December 6-7, 2021 for the 7th Conference on Sustainable Tourism in Asia (COSTA 2021), which will be held as a virtual event from Tokyo, Japan. Due to ongoing efforts to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, such as travel restrictions, curfews and business shutdowns in major metropolitan areas, this conference is being held online. All oral and poster presenters are invited to join us either live via Zoom or to submit pre-recorded oral presentations or virtual posters. COSTA 2021 is being convened by INTESDA in affiliation with the the Parasitic Disease Research Center, Suranaree University of Technology, Thailand and the Family Medical Co., Ltd., Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. About COSTA 2021 Perhaps no other sector of the global economy has been impacted by COVID-19 as greatly as the tourism industry. The shutdown of airports, borders and restricted access to nearly every country in the world to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and its variants has had a ripple effect on not only airlines and hotels, but also the food industry, supply chains, shipping and transportation and just about anyone working in the service industry. A recent report by the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, revealed that international tourism, fell by over 70%, which represents nearly one billion fewer travelers in that period and a financial hit to the tourism industry of nearly one trillion USD. Not surprisingly, while tourism in Europe and North America were badly hurt, the geographic regions which were hardest hit by COVID-19 were in Asia. While infection rates have waned due to vaccinations, the UNWTO predicts that a return to 2019 tourism levels in terms may take up 30 to 48 months. Eventually, tourism will return but it may never be the same as it was prior to 2019. Health vigilance, such as ‘vaccination passport’ and other health measures will likely become part of the new norm. Call for Proposals With the theme of “Tourism, COVID-19 and Recovery”, we are holding the 7th Conference on Sustainable Tourism in Asia as a virtual event. Since the pandemic is still ongoing and travel has not resumed, the virtual format is an ideal setting and a safe presentation format to network, make friends, discuss research, share ideas and hear from others about the impact, challenges and changes to tourism as we move forward to a post-COVID-19 world. The Deadline for Proposals of 250 words in English is Friday, November 12, 2021. Click on the Link Below to Submit your Proposal Today!
